Is this rug too much?

last modified: 24 days ago

I originally had the black and white rug in the first picture, but it got ruined when my cat had a hairball with food dye and I was given bad instructions to clean the rug and ruined it. Do you think this new rug in the second photo is too much?

Personally, I like your second rug much more than the first. But I would consider replacing the lamp above the table with something more striking.

I think a rug with blue in it would be more interesting. This one is from Wayfair.

Thank you Tachch, any suggestions on a light fixture? Thanks Lyn, nice pick on blue rug. I like it, however, I tend to lean a little neutral mid-century modern. It is actually a great price. The brown rug that I purchased was from Lulu in Georgia and they can be quite expensive, the blue one is much cheaper.

I have attached pictures of my other rooms too see what you think with the blue rug? Please note that the kitchen was done over 10 years ago and I know it's boring, but since my husband passed away, I just don't have the funds to change it right now.

Suggest leaning more into the MCM feel of your room and pulling in the wall color to create a more cohesive space and to tie in with your other blue accents.

I really like this rug as the triangles really suits the mirror.

    If interested:

I like your dining room lighting and I’d save the money and the effort.

Thank you Maureen, I see where you're going with this rug and I like it, but after seeing it down, I worry if it's the wrong shade of blue?

I can't offer anything specific yet; I need to analyze the entire space, and it turns out you have a lot of different things there, too.

I also think the dining area has enough blue without the rug, but the area by the fireplace is a bit lacking. I'd rather add some in the pillows and the large painting on the wall to the left of the fireplace.

Tachch you mean where the TV is? I have since changed out the pillows.

The pillows on the sofa, and throughout that entire area. But I liked the pillows in the previous photos better; just keep the darkest ones and remove the light ones. And as I wrote, I need a large blue accent to the left of the "fireplace" or whatever you have there...

I would also put an oval rug under the round table.

While I appreciate your advice, I do like my pillows. I was coming here for advice for a rug and showed the other pictures of the house because it is open concept and I would want the rug to cohesively fit with everything.

If you choose a rug whose geometric pattern has less strong contrast of light and dark, any spots will not be quite so obvious.

Ido not think the rug is too much! It looks nice and you have a lovely home.

Thank you Cyprissa! Thank you Chispa, I remodeled my kitchen years ago, before everyone jumped on the all-white trend. Given the chance today, I'd definitely lean into warmer tones. I'm sharing pictures of my open-concept house because I need help picking a rug that flows with the entire space. Honestly, I was nervous to post. I tried this forum five years ago (with a different, beachy decor style) and got a lot of criticism on things I wasn't even asking about. It really stung, as I'm passionate about decorating. I stayed away for years, but decided to try again today because I'm really stuck on this rug choice. I'm hoping that by asking a specific question, I can keep the feedback focused. I appreciate all the thoughtful suggestions many of you have already given!

I like your kitchen and hate that you felt you had to apologize for it. And I am sorry for your previous experience.

Your kitchen looks great and fits the space. White kitchen have always been popular and I also chose to do an all white kitchen when we built in 2021. Why? I wanted a bright neutral kitchen and my 2 previous houses had dark stained cabinets and I was ready for a change. Don't you think all the people currently doing white painted cabinet with white oak cabinets are going to feel tired of their kitchen in 10 years! In my area most are doing that mix right now, so it will be overdone soon enough!

You have color and texture in your furnishings, so your white kitchen is the perfect simple background.

Same comment as the ones above - you have a lovely home. It's clear that you have an eye for design. Your kitchen fits your home. There is no reason to change it.

Also, I am sorry that you've lost your husband. 💕

@michelle41 Guess I jumped on the white kitchen ”trend” early, very early 90’s, have had them ever since. I tire of colors ( even for cars ) so white is easy for me.

Btw, I’ve said it before, you need a thick skin on this site if you post a photo. NO matter what you post, no matter how nice, tasteful or whatever, someone will chime in with a negative comment! Your kitchen is great, btw, as well as your home.

"Thank you all so much! It’s such a relief to know that white kitchens are still loved—it makes me feel so much better about mine, especially since a remodel isn't in the budget.

I love the idea of just swapping out some decor when I need a fresh look! Chispa, you made a great point: I’d hate to spend a fortune changing it just to regret the new style in ten years. At least white is timeless and versatile. This has been a good reminder to be thankful for what I have.

Since losing my husband, managing everything on one income is a challenge, and 'luxury' changes aren't a priority right now. This conversation has help me to choose to be happy with what I have for now, with only minor changes. K. Laurence, I tire of colors too and wood tones, perhaps I should be careful what I wish for.

    Thanks again everyone!

OMG! I loved looking at your total concept. You have such a beautiful home. You have a great eye. YOU should be giving "me" advice on decorating.

I'm sorry you lost your husband. I also really liked the rug the cat ruined. The neutral let your other colors in the room shine through.
