76 most read books of the "decade"Link

I just came across this, dated Dec 2023 so we've probably shared this previously...but who can remember.

I thought it was pretty good. I'm going to peruse it some more but at a glance, I've definitely read many.

    I've read 36.

I did see a few that I would like to read, and I will say that this is a popularity list really, most read. I'm sure reviews and word of mouth influence what catches on, but several of the ones I read on this list would not be recommended by me.

A quick scan says I've read a dozen or so. Lots to add to my "Want to read" list. Thanks for posting.

You can generate an up to date list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/143500.Best_Books_of_the_Decade_2020_s

I looked at the top 100 and was surprised I'd only read 19...but then again, a lot of them are fantasy and romantasy which is not my thing.

    Good list!
There are three that I haven't read. Two because the subject matter doesn't interest me, the third one I just put on hold.

    76--what an odd number

I’ve read about 30%. Some are quality, excellent reads and some are just popular. I guess that’s self explanatory with the title of the list but still vaguely depressing.

I have not read any of them, but I have read other books by some of the authors. For the last few years--actually maybe a decade, I have only been reading or listening to 19th and early 20th century fiction, I guess I want to remove myself from the present.

Interesting to look back and compare my personal list to the popular list. Ive read 25 of them, or thereabouts. Like the NYT Bestsellers, there are a lot of ” bubblegum for the brain” books rather than excellent writing. Im talking about you, Colleen Hoover.

    Thanks, Salonva.

I download books from Overdrive from my library. I can sort the books available for Kindle by popularity or by date added.

I usually pick popularity which explains why I've read or at least started almost everything on that list. The new releases sort usually contains a lot of kid and teen books, self-help and heavy non-fiction.

I have read quite a few of these well. To be honest while I prefer well written meaningful books I sneak in some light, fun reading in-between.

I've only read four of the list, yet Im an avid reader. An odd duck, I guess. "Quack."

I think I read 19, but then maybe more. When I go to the library on Wednesday(tonight) I pick books off the shelf and with my phone i check them out on Goodreads ratings and I never take one under 3.9 % approval.I have a bad habit of not writing down what I read, and the library keeps a list, but it's not too long. I have gotten the same book out and read two pages in it and realize. I reserve books I really want to read, getting them off NYTIME list. I read mostly fiction.

From a quick look, I've only read about 10 or so. Now that I'm retired I decided I'm going to read a lot more. While working, I pretty much only read when on vacation.

I will say most of the ones I haven't read do not look appealing to me. My fave genre is historical fiction. I think I've read all of that genre on the list.

I found out long ago that versions of the "most read" lists don't work for me. I have nothing against such lists that many people rely on. It's just me and my quirky preferences. For the same reason, I had to exit many book clubs because of the choice of books and I probably was insufferable in book club meetings when I did belong in one. I've learned over time whose recommendations work for me (e.g., online book critics, posts on forums such as this one).

I like mysteries, adventure and espionage. None of the authors that I read regularly made either list. That's why I never join book clubs and stopped posting on the "What We are Reading" thread here.

Ditto, minus adventure and plus suspense, perhaps implied with your categories. Also for me, historical non-fiction of certain periods and areas.

What I've seen of book club genres and heard of the vibe of many book club discussions makes them not appeal to me. Maybe what I've heard about them isn't accurate.

I think I have read about 25 from the list. Guess I have work to do!

I read a lot of books, but surprisingly have only read two on this particular list. I say surprisingly because I do read a lot of popular contemporary fiction (among other genres shown), so expected there would be more.

The two I’ve read are The Girl On The Train and Big Little Lies.

I’ve been very into thrillers and suspense lately, psychological and/or crime, written by British authors. I thought there might be more of that on the list.

    Thanks for sharing, Salon.

I think I need other things to do with my time. I read 25! An interesting mix of titles. I mean, A Little Life and All The Light We Cannot See shouldn't be on the same list as Malibu Rising, don't you think? By the way, I did not read Malibu Rising. I just shelve it a lot when I volunteer at my library.

    I agree that it's an odd list. I've read 9, though I can't say I've enjoyed all 9.

I agree with all of you- I just thought it was an interesting list and I was curious how it fared over time. Elmer, I used to be in 4 book clubs and slowly slowly dropped out of one, then another, and have now taken a break from all. I did enjoy it for many years, and appreciated that it did get me to read books I might never have considered. Many were good- but over more time it seems there were too many that felt like they were infriging on my time so to speak.

I keep saying there so many good books I want to read and I just want to read what I want, when I want.

@salonva...I'm wiith you. My favorite books are outside the beaten path. But I love them. I don't do fluffy stuff, or stupid romances, or tiresome mysteries, or too predictable, poorly written novels of whatever. My name is hobbitmom, and I'm a book snob.

Interesting list. I have read 32 of those, mostly audio books while walking or cleaning the house, when I tend to need lighter fare. Although some of them, like Killers of the Flower Moon are quite heavy and educational. I probably started another half dozen of the listed books, but couldn't get into them so didn't finish.

I've read only five from that list..

Read: The Girl on the Train, The Goldfinch, Underground Railroad, The Testaments, The Dutch House, Between the World and Me

I have Michelle Obama's 'Becoming' beautifully displayed on my shelf but haven't gotten to it yet.

I enjoy television quite a bit these days, so :

Watched the tv or movie version: The girl on the train, Underground Railroad, Where the Crawdads Sing, Lessons in Chemistry, Little Fires Everywhere, Station Eleven, Crazy Rich Asians, Killers of the Flower Moon

I guess that leaves a lot of reading to do to catch up with the past decade !
