How large are you talking? And should i put anything there where the sign is or just leave it blank?

You could add a cute rug if you need one to catch drips of water/dirt.

If you are "ambitious" (+ it works with your home), you could add picture moulding on the walls going up and down the stairs.

The biggest improvement I've seen for entries like yours is adding natural light into the area.

In this example, they not only added more light by the front door, they also removed the partial wall and replaced with spindles in order to let more light in + make it feel like a less closed-in space:

They also changed the paint color - but you don't have to use a light gray in order to "brighten" up your entry area.

The project below included a new door, sidelight, transom window over door+ opening up the wall along the side:

It looks like you have a full wall along the stairs leading up - making a half wall or replacing it entirely with spindles would have a large impact on the space.

The kitchen is along that wall, so I’m not sure a half wall would work. That is a great idea though!

Nothing on the wall where the word-sign is now. I also suggest, as others have, a large framed canvas in colors you love. Large, as in 30”x 48”.

And a pretty rug.
