Masking fluid usage

I am painting a French door and bought the masking fluid that can be painted over, then you cut with a blade and peel it off. It is suggested that the entire window be coated. My question is do I have to coat the entire window or just a strip around the edge of the glass? Are they just trying to sell more product?
