In California, ADU's are extremely popular and the approval process has been streamlined to make them easier to build. Our neighbor had theirs dropped in by crane over their house!

tracefloyd, doesn't that depend on location within the state? Is it really all the same in, say, Hayward as it is Glendale?

In any case, I'm sure restrictions vary from state to state, and frequently from county to county, etc.

Newsom recently signed the ADU bill for the whole state of California.

Other than zoning, an ADU would depend on demand for the area. Or the individual needs of the owner.

1600 sf is 40ft x 40ft. An average one bedroom ADU is 500 sf e.g. 20 ft x 25 ft. Does that leave you enough room for everything else you need? You need setbacks too.
