Small powder room, no window.flooring would be replaced so open for suggestion. I would want a more contemporary/ elegant look and can't change the top. I would do a gold faucet.

BTW, a larger format terrazzo tile might be nice for the flooring if you want a more modern look. they make very nice porcelain versions or terrazzo.

I did a very small powder room for a more modern cabinet rental. it was a black vanity w/black top. if you look in the reflection you'll see wood shelving over the toilet. Vertical panels for the walls w/paper behind the sink

The vanity has already been shipped so I can't change the top. I wanted to keep it light cause its a small room. All the stock pictures showed me subway tiles. So I am not sure if this the route to go.

this will work w/a white top too. go w/the black tile behind the vanity.

If you don't like florals, don't have florals. But I'm confused by your saying you're open to pattern but don't want patterns.

I may have misunderstood your intent, but (doing the best I can), I suggest that there is nothing not modern in having a patterned wallpaper. Also, although it is certainly possible to have a wallpaper with a subtle pattern, such as grasscloth, where the texture creates the pattern, there is still a pattern there.

If you want the vanity to be the only thing that has a clearly visible pattern, so be it. But if you are open to pattern, I suggest you start looking for what is often marketed as "Art Deco"—although in the 1920s–30s is was more often called "Moderne" (at least in architecture). You don't need 100% authenticity! But you may find inspiration in the results of such a search.

Only you can know your personal tolerance for visual busyness. Also, unless you elaborate for the rest of us, only you can know what you mean by "modern."

I'd be tempted to repeat the pattern from the vanity and choose kitkat tiles. I love Beth's pictures with black tile or paint.

I found this picture with some light accents mixed in with the black.

Those tiles can go vertical or horizontal depending on your taste.

I am a lover of simple tile choices in a bathroom and in this one for sure no heering bone or ribbled that will look like you tried to match the vanity nad missed horribly. My choice a nice large format porcelian tile in a taupe/ brown tone , matching grout and maybe a counter in a marble with a taupe/ brown vein. That keeps all simple and not going to be dated in a year. It also allows cahnge in wall color or accessories down the road without huge expensive changes ,You could then add an interesting wallpaper since this is aPR>or just a nice wall color and one large fabulous piece of art . Powder rooms are great to let your fun come out . The fact is good lighting is all you need in that space then go crazy and honestly if you find a wallpapwer you just love I would probably spend the monety to change the counter if needed .

@ MV I loved the picture at first but the more I look at it, I feel dizzy. I guess I would steer away from the pencil tiles. They may look awesome in a big space for sure.

@ Patricia Colwell Consulting I was looking at Taupe/ charcoal big format tiles. But you are right, I shouldn't ignore the brown tiles. They will create a nice background for the vanity to pop.
