Color scheme and tile design ideas

We are remodeling our primary bathroom. Chrome fixtures were either existing or added 4 years ago when we moved and painted black and gray.

We are removing the flooring and tub, adding a closet and enlarging the shower. Also removing the mirror, countertop, sinks and faucets.

We are keeping the vanity base as I prefer wood stained, not painted.

I am staying with chrome for the fixtures.

I’m looking for color scheme and tile choices to work with the wood vanity and chrome fixtures.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Do you have any natural light? a window in the main bath area?

great to keep the vanity in wood tone. love chrome for bathroom fixtures.

Tile options depend on style and budget.

I like a bathroom to feel clean and fresh, spa like, I'd sample SW Sky High

wondering what your paint brand of choice is for other options.

a white tile will allow for changing up towel colors, Seasonal, etc.

    Thanks Lyn

No windows or natural light, but nice light from the fixtures..

I generally use Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore paint.

Looking for a warmer, maybe moody look as opposed to the current black/white/gray.

I would not gut the whole bathroom and then try to keep the vanity. You can get a lot more storage out of a new frameless full overlay vanity. Your sink cabinets can be smaller and you can get more inches for the drawer stack.

    Interesting thought!

My thought process was if I replaced the vanity, I would want the same wood stain. Plus adding the new closet I’ll have ample storage.

    Thanks!

What colors do you like? Do you have any inspiration photos? Without any direction, other than the stained wood vanity + chrome fixtures, we are just guessing at what you might like. Your wood vanity + chrome could be used with MANY colors of tile/paint.

    Here are some "moody" ideas:

The person who posted this Instagram video wrote something about how when you select a white bathroom, people say it's boring - and when you do a moody one, people will say that it's too much = go with what makes you happy!

    https://www.instagram.com/reels/DGoH7ODJF-8/

Color is a dark blue gray.

A bit lighter than "moody" - but a pretty bathroom:

The next two photos below are of the same bathroom:

Many different color/size/shape tiles can be used to create a moody bathroom - a huge consideration is the grout color that you decide to use.

The next three photos are all of the same tile - only the grout color has been changed:

    Soft gray:

The black grout used below created a dramatic/moody look.

The person who posted this next bathroom commented that if you do a mostly neutral/light bathroom, people will say it's boring - and if you do a bolder/moody bathroom, people will say it's "too much." You need to do what makes you happy.

The bathroom below has a dark blue/gray paint color on the walls/doors/trim (color drenched the room).

This next bathroom is lighter/brighter - not really "moody" - however, if you color drenched the room, it would be more dramatic. Also - it's a pretty color for a bathroom:

The next two photos are of the same bathroom - just wanted to show you all (most) of the room:

Green is pretty popular for bathrooms - however, there are many different shades:

The trim detail above the shower in the next photo is sold at Home Depot:

The next three bathrooms show similar shades - colors like the ones below have become popular recently:

This bathroom below is pretty - however, extending the color of the walls into a floating vanity (or in your bathroom, a countertop) + to the flooring will limit making leass expensive changes/updates in the future.

I saw this while I was looking at bathrooms - it is a great example of how important the color selection for the grout is - it can turn a bathroom dramatic/moody:

I like the soft gray used below:

I've tried posting my comment several times - it keeps disappearing! I even tried posting without a ton of photos. So - here it is - however, I did not re-type all of the comments that I made initially because I'm tired!

Do you have any inspiration photos? There are many option that would work with your stained vanity and chrome fixtures!

The color on the walls/trim below is a really dark blue/gray:

This bathroom below isn't "moody" - however, it's a pretty color for a bathroom + if the room was color drenched, it would make the room look more moody:

Thank you for all the great photos! I hadn’t thought of using grout to completely change the look.

Sage green was my first thought, but then I thought maybe I should go with blue/green, or a dark blue.

Sage green is a wonderful color for hitting both the interest and somewhat moody factor, while keeping it light and spa like.

Most inspo pics with sage green tile will have a slighter vanity, not as brown as yours.

I can go either way on your vanity. It seems to be in good shape and you like the tone of wood. Why spend more money than needed and create more waste? However, it seems slightly disappointing to invest in gutting an entire bathroom to end up with a dated looking vanity that doesn't have max storage space.

Wall color and lighting are influential in bathrooms. What colors and lighting flatter your skin tones? If your skin does not look it’s best in your bathroom you will jot likely be happy. A white bathroom with the right lighting can flatter most skin hues.

Is there a reason you're removing the flooring? Whille those are builder grade tiles, that makes them easy to find in a big box store to extend into your closet. If you're trying to minimize expense, build your closet with a wood door that matches the vanity finish. Add your shower enclosure. Paint walls light sage green. Get brass fixtures with the money you save from not ripping out the tile. Add warm lighting., double mirrors, indoor outdoor rug, solid ivory towels, better art.

    Thanks housegal200!
Actually, the floors are sheet vinyl. Thanks for your thoughts, especially the closet door matching the vanity!

Okay. Didn't know the floor was vinyl. Just make sure to replace with a warm color that hamonizes with the wood vanity finish and the closet door.

Thanks Beth H for all the thoughts! Yes, we do need hardware on the vanity.

    Great photos too!
