Exterior remodel

last month

HI there, met with architect who drafted these exterior remodel plans for our 1978 ranch home. For colors we are leaning towards Smoky Ash in the DiamondKote line with white trim and white windows. Stuck on if we should do an accent solor in shakes for the peak. Where I am stuck is with the front entry. I love the Craftsman look/elements but wondering if a wooden beam type entry way with a dormer over the garage doors would look more "modern". Would love to see any pictures of maybe what that could look like. Also attaching a picture of the current house as it is now (maroon home).

Would suggest doing what you prefer to do unless your area requires homes to look similar to one another per the city/county code. Do you have any restrictions like that?

No we have no codes or HOA or anything

    No to any extras.

Consider some changes to the porch. Adding a beam above the columns, and changing the proportion and scale of the columns -- shorter base and the column overall gets larger (see left side). I moved the center column to the right a bit, and the roof should follow that. Added stone below the chairs.

I cannot see on your rendering, but add a frieze if not there. Details like this make a difference.

I'd ask the architect for details about whether the porch roof is going to be lower than it is now or higher than the roof. I'm not sure the geometry works. You'll be able to tell from a side view.

a dormer over the garage doors? you already have a gable roof over the garage.

an open beam and truss over the front porch would let more light into the house.

what direction does the house face?

It is south facing...perhaps awning better describes what I was thinking...something like this

however, the smokey ash can come off as a gray blue.

Graphite and Onxy might be a better selection. less blue-gray to it

This Graphite siding w/the darker rock and wood color elements is very nice

The Board and batten is a diff look. lighter stone, wood accents

That picture you have labeled Ash with the lighter tones and the house with the 2 white tapered colums was the look I was going for!!!! I just also like the wood beams alot and thought maybe that would be better than the white columns? Ugh, this is so hard and I am only doing this once!!! $$$$$ I just am not a fan of the stone in that picture. We will probably be going with Versetta brand. Was hoping to find some times that warm it up a bit as the greys are very cool and I feel like its too stark maybe without a bit or lighter or warmer tones?

the lighting where you live will have a huge impact. you can't "warm up" something that is already a cool blue tone.

you say you face south, so that should give you birght light. on the rear you'll get cooler, northern light which may make it appear a cooler gray.

why not grab some samples, take them home and see how they look at diff times of the day?

Personally I like the board and batten combo w/the shake.

notice how they did the decorative wood corbels over the garage door. I like this addition of the warmer wood tones. maybe some cedar wood posts would also help.

What if the new gable was as high as the peak of the garage (in your plan, one is as high as the garage) and it went to the right of the front door?

Forget my sugesstion. It is not what you have asked. Here is the smokey ash with pelican for the gable fronts. If you do this, I would paint the garage doors smokey ash. Keep smokey ash all across the front and let the three front gables be lighter.

I see no need for applied stone on the columns, If you do the applied brick to make the appearance of foundation, that's okay, but plant in front of it.

Hosta: perennial and it is easy care, loves a bit of shade
