advice on painting cabinets

last month

Hi, we’ve got a small L-shaped kitchen that opens into living area. Planning a mini reno-painting cabinets & replacing counters. Thoughts on a medium-dark gray for bottom & an off-white for top(hear White Dove from BM a lot)-comments? Living area is painted a blue with gray undertones so hoping for a somewhat coordinated look. Also suggestions for countertops. Thanks

For any help you need to post pictures of the entire area.

Please post pictures, and do some serious thinking whether you want two toned cabinets. Cabinets all one color is a better look.

NIce looking cabinets in my opinion. I would not paint them at all. Not worth the 2 weeks time in my opinion. New tops would be what I would do. Soapstone would go nicely.

I would not paint these cabinets. The current finish will last longer and look nicer than a DIY or contractor paint job. A true cabinet painter who can recreate a factory finish will charge nearly the cost of new cabinets for the paint job.

You cabinets look great. I'd do a refresh with just new counters. It you want to brighten up the space and give it a really changed look, white countertops, new wall paint, new curtains, and a new "island" table will go a long way.

Your cabinets seem to be in good shape so I wouldn't paint them (and not 2-colours for your space). Since you're not showing the adjoining room which would have helped for a complete integration, I cannot comment on the wall colour but I do suggest a creamy white for the kitchen. Perhaps instead of spending for a professional finish painting the cabinets you can consider painting the adjoining walls?

I suggest you update the knob, pulls on the cabinets and faucet for brass. Replace the countertop for creamy white quartz (if veined choose lightly veined), a glossy white tile backsplash in a white to coordinate with the countertop. Replace your wood table and stool with a proper freestanding island with 2 stools at front and storage at back (Wayfair), hang roman shades on the window and door.

I definitely would not be painting those cabinets. Wood cabinets are coming back in style, and will stay nice looking for much longer than painted cabinets will. I like the cabinet pulls you have on there. I wouldnt change those either. I would put in the new countertops, and add a rug in front of the sink, and possibly paint the walls. Your kitchen looks to be in great condition.

Agree with the others that the wood cabinets are too nice to paint, but I also understand your desire to integrate the look and feel of the kitchen with other rooms.

I would look at bringing in some blue into the kitchen with the backsplash, wall color and decor items.

The next 2 pics are of kitchens with wood cabinets and blue backsplashes. The last picture is a blue/gray tile with some warmth that I think would look nice with your cabinets.

    @catdog12

As I requested above to post more pictures of the adjoining rooms, by doing so, you would most likely receive more specific suggestions.

Here is a picture of a similar tile I found in a view your room app.

They went a bit overboard on the backsplash - but I think this look with the blue gray walls, coordinating countertop and island would be really nice.

The kitchen is essentially open to the living area-walls are a blue/gray.

You could use the same paint in the kitchen on the walls, or at least one wall, that you have in the living room.

I would continue the blue wall color into the kitchen, add a pretty backsplash with blues in it and a white countertop. Add under cabinet lighting and more/better/nicer lighting at ceiling level. Keep the cabinets - very similar to your hutch in the living room. Coordinates beautifully.

Once that is done you can decide if you need more changes to either room.

Area rug, furniture covers, coordinated window treatments, painting the island or chairs. . .

Thank you for your recs-very much appreciated.

You can continue the blue wall colour in the kitchen however I would stay with the glossy white tile backsplash 1) for contrast, and 2) you're not tied into blue should you decide to change your colour scheme in the future.

My method for picking colors is a bit different. Builders found that when they mass produced homes the use of all neutrals allowed anyone to come in, buy their home and decorate to their own taste.

This has become the rule. Is the color palette good for resale has become the question. But we live in our homes. We aren't all flippers where the focus should be on selling. Why is it more important to be part of the current trend instead of celebrating our uniqueness?

What do these living rooms say about the person living in the home - how are they reflecting the home owner's unique personality?

Do you see this guy in one of the above living rooms?

Are white walls always the right answer?

    Before and after:

I am pretty sure this woman knows she looks great in blue greens - why not bring the colors that make you feel like a 10 into your home?

Can you imagine this couple living in a home with a bland tan living room:

I love walking into a home or seeing pictures of a home an imagining what the person is like. . . who lives here:

    or here

    or here

I like to build a color palette from the colors that make the home owner's heart sing.

I love figuring out how to bring their art and decor to life using the right colors and finishes and how to make the colors flow from room to room so that each room harmonizes with the next.

Your living room color would look great on your kitchen walls. You can already see how nice it looks where it meets up with your cabinet on the left side.

Was your fridge originally under the high uppers by the back door? I'm curious about that space.

I'm a lover of white subway tile with thin grout lines. But there are so many other ways you can go here too.

I'd also consider a nice floor mat in the center of the kitchen on which to place your island. I think it will help ground the room.

More great ideas-thanks! Oh, the “mystery” of those high cabinets-I think the previous owners had a piece of furniture against the wall beneath those. My husband wants to take them down-I’m fine with that but we’d need more storage.
