Is spring here?

last month

It feels more like May than March here today. It is 74 degrees and sunny. The forecast is calling for the next ten days to be quite mild (except for one day). Bob and I drove around the property and lots of daylilies are coming up. Daffodils and hyacinths are growing. We found some iris reticulate and snow drops blooming.

This little patch of iris seems to be dying out, but we have three over thriving patches that aren't ready to bloom yet.

Snow drops

I know it's way too early to get excited about spring. Late March and April could bring some nasty weather, Still, I think the worst might be over.

Nancy, wrong person and zone here to answer that question!! We have had temps in the 80s for several days. My daffodils are not lasting long in that heat. Daylilies are up and thriving and iris are budding. Other spring shrubs like forsythia are in full bloom. Yet, I know we will have ”blackberry winter“ with cooler temps-a cool down is expected next week. We may even get another frost and have actually seen in years past light snow in late March and early April. But, like you, I can get excited about the worst of winter being over. As a survivor of ice storm Fern, I look forward to it, weeds included!!! (Well, not really the weeds!!)

Spring comes suddenly in the Midwest, and can disappear just as fast. I always fear payback by Mother Nature, as well as summer in spring. But we deserve reprieve from a bad winter. Just wish that the weeds weren't growing.

Yes, the weeds are growing as fast as the daffodils! But I sure have enjoyed those 70-degree temps.

Yes, spring seems early but cold is coming back next week!

My Snow Drops started blooming in January before that horrible freeze which was followed by the snow and ice with continued frigid weather. They survived it all some how and just finished blooming last week. A few dafs are blooming but the coming cold will take care of that.

Kay, life, like the weather, does have its surprises, doesn't it? Who would expect rabies shots? We had over 4 inches of rain last week; I'm sure Mother Nature will deprive us when we really need it. Next week, the weatherman assures us, will be super nasty. Early daffodils are already taking a beating with the rain. Next thing, the magnolia will try to bloom just before the cold blast.

Mantis, It always seems to happen, doesn't it. Plants are doing so very well and weather changes in whatever way is necessary to destroy the beauty.

And just so you know, rabies shots don't hurt but they tend to make one feel fairly ill. Luckily it has lasted only a day.

We have lacked rain for quite some time but are finally getting a few rains now.

Kaye: I'm so sorry to hear about the cat attack. You answered my question before I asked it about how painful the rabies shots are. They used to be very painful. How many shots do they give now days. Did the cat run off?.............Maryl

Hi Maryl. Yes, the cat did indeed run off. Now there are only four shots to be taken. One shot, three days later, the second, four days after that the third and a week until the last one. The shot now is really not painful which is good but the sick feeling and slight fever afterwards is not pleasant. I do see the humor in being attacked by a cat, but she was indeed very vicious. Had she been a large animal, she would have been scary.
