You asked so wall to wall carpet is for most people a big no even when no kids or pets. You will see how gross underneath when you pull up the one you have. Waht are the floors in the rest of the home ?

Carpet can get gross, if the people living there let it get dirty and are not good housekeepers. Grossness does not start of the bottom and work it's way to the surface, it starts on the top of the carpet and works down.

This carpet is not wall to wall, but it is room sized with about a 3"-4" margin. This is the area right inside of the door in the main bedroom. I did not clean anything for this picture except a bit of dust right at the margin. This has been in place for eight years or so and has never been picked up off the floor, rotated or moved.

I don't think this looks gross. Not the back of the carpet, the top or back of the pad, or the floor.

If you are not moving get what you want. I prefer short and dense pile rather than too plushy.

I wouldn't use wall to wall carpet unless I had a fabulous vacuum cleaner and never allowed shoes OR bare feet in the room.

When you have solid non carpet flooring you see just how much dust you generate in a very short time.

I prefer a solid flooring and an area rug to define areas. Dust and vacuum regularly.

That part is true, we do not wear shoes in the house and do not really walk around barefoot on a regular basis. If we do it is immediately after we have bathed and do not have dirty or oily feet, and we vacuum frequently. But it's quite easy to vacuum frequently if you are not cleaning up a week or two's worth of dirt.

In any case, the OP did not ask whether or not she should have carpet at all. Houzz GW is notoriously anti carpet. One would think that all broadloom manufacturers would be bankrupt if the entire population were so grossed out by carpet.

I genuinly wonder why wall to wall carpeting is considered a gross alternative to an area rug? I would think that a 9 x 12 rug accumulates an equal amount of dirt, and yes, theoretically can be removed to get cleaned, but realistically, how often does that happen?

@palimpsest,jinwpg …. haven’t you noticed that when certain dilemmas are posted on here you can bet that you’ll get the same predictable responses ? I have a list but won’t dare to post it, lol.

It’s personal preference for sure but I like a touch of tonal pattern to break up the expanse - FWIW i feel like loop pile carpet is very popular now but I have had issues with my dog’s claws catching/pulling the loops - not a concern for you without pets but just thought I would mention

This is not something you can crowd source, , unless you like a trip to nowhere.

Go to a good broadloom store, not a big box.

A wool/nylon blend will outlive you.

Take samples home, look at them in your space, with your furnishings, in your light. Stand back from it as well, six to eight feet as when installed, THAT is how you see it in your space. Try to avoid seams......and we know not, the size of your room. Seams? Will render some broadloom better than others, for how well they will seam! and where it will be located,

ONE question can be answered. "Plush" is definitely out: )

Personally, depending room and adjacent areas, another mystery here? I am for hardwood , especially if some already exists in your home, such as an adjacent kitchen.

Want more help? add more context to your question. Beyond that, it is local shopping, and plan multiple trips, with samples.

We have carpet throughout our upstairs and have three kids and a dog. My family wears no shoes in the house and mostly socks but I am sure there are bare feet too. It is absolutely personal preference. I love the quiet of the carpet, the softness underfoot, the difference from our main floor too. We vacuum. Just like we do on the main floor. Find a carpet that has more than one colour in it, we have found this wears better ver time. I fully agree with comments that dirts starts on top and makes its way down. Enjoy your carpet!
