We’ve decided to go with new paint in this front entrance. When you come in you have a dining room to the right and an office to the left. You walk out of the entrance across the hall into the living room.

The front entrance has little natural light coming from the north and some of the south facing living room light. The office has substantial millwork through out and the dining room will be a muddy, moody olive green or something.

We’re looking to move the house to a more updated yet still classic look. The living room has a large rock fireplace and has some mountain vibe to it.

I’m really struggling with paint colours. I’d love to avoid painting the trim, millwork and doors. However it is quite a creamy colour that risks being toooo beige or yellow with the wrong colour. Help!

Also, ignore the furniture and rug. We have just moved in and have yet to get furniture.

Your home is beautiful, it's classic and spacious looking. You're right to consider the colors of the adjoining rooms. From your description, it appears that the photograph was taken from the living room, is that correct? So, the room you're considering painting is the room straight ahead with the large mirror on the left, and not the room with the golden color on the walls. If so, and you don't want to repaint the trim and millwork, consider painting the entry walls to match the trim color. You would then have a neutral and monotone entry that would be calming and coordinate with everything beyond it. Good luck, I look forward to seeing the finished product.

I strongly encourage you to make some furniture and rug selections before you paint anything. No need to box yourself into a corner with color as furniture and rugs are more limiting than paint. I agree with Kim about an all neutral / light approach for the foyer but that only works if you know your vision with the rug, furniture, etc. the rug you have now seems to be too small for that space. Consider a custom cut broadloom rug to fill that space (leaving a border of wood). There are nice classic patterns like a trellis pattern, plaid, etc for visual interest.

You could also paint the ceiling of the foyer a light blue grey just to add some drama to the foyer if the all neutral approach seems a tad safe to you.
