Too Rug or No Rug? That is the question. Rug Help Please!

Good afternoon all,

It’s been so long since I’ve posted here that the last time that I posted it was still Garden Web lol!

The kids are all grown so Im back to decorating our 1910 home. The design style that I am leaning into I‘d describe as Grimm’s Fairytale. Think The Addam’s Family meets Alice In Wonderland all grown up and super suspicious if that makes sense. Our home still has all of the original stained glass windows, hardware and Victorian details sprinkled thought-out and that’s what I’m trying to lean into.

Over the last few weekends I got our 4’x5’ vestibule wallpapered, ceiling painted and wall sconces up.

I’m stuck on a washable rug for the space. Maybe I don’t even need one?

The first rug that I got we loved & thought fit perfect design and color wise but the 2’x 3’ scale was off in the space. Rug color and pattern is the last pic in the this trio:

We found that a 4’ round fit better visually size wise but I am not happy with the rug that just came. The vibe is off - can’t put my finger on what or why. Thoughts?

I’d love your feedback on Rug or No Rug?

If yes to rug, can you help me find something that looks and fits better?

Fabulous--would love to see the rest of your home! Such a breath of fresh air after all the neutral/gray/safe/transitional homes seen on Houzz.

I would not use a rug either--especially one in the same color as that great wallpaper which would draw attention away from it.

I don't think you need a full rug BUT you do need a good door mat.

LOVE the tile, wouldn't cover it up, but protect it with a good waterhog mat.

I think the second rug shown reads more bohemian and therefore is a bit off. I wouldn't cover your unique tile floor at all. Just have a nice sized mat on the exterior. I didn't want to add any visual noise to my entry floor, so I just have a large mat on the porch and shoes can be wiped before entering. Seems to be enough.

Lovely space! I think your mosaic tile border already reads as a rug so I’d vote to do no rug OR splurge for a custom rug that fit perfectly with the mosaic.

Fantastic tile. No way would I cover that up unless I needed a rug for managing mucky feet. In that case I'd get a waterhog mat. I live in an 1852 house and used a waterhog in the vestibule. Oddly enough, it looked much better than any kind of printed rug.

Coming back to say that what you've achieved is magnificent in my book, ttodd.

It does seem a shame to cover any of that gorgeous tile with a waterhog mat, but unless you have the servants who daily used to clean a house of that apparent vintage, a walk-off mat of some sort is a practical addition. It will help keep the worst of the outside dirt in the vestibule, and prevent its being tracked into the house.

Lovely foyer! Wouldn’t add a round rug; but suggest more of a mat (a bit bigger than the 2x3 you tried), placing on longer side wall to wall at the front door. Consider something that plays up the paper.

If you want to put something down on rainy days (to avoid slipping), IIRC a Victorian solution was coir (coconut) matting. It's a bit awkward to store when not in use, though, and it may shed a bit. On the other hand, you can roll up a waterhog mat, and if you have a place to put it when not in use, it might come in handy in wet weather.

I really just came back here so I could look at your gorgeous vestibule again. And to thank you for paying the pet tax. Please pet your dog for me!

Anyway, WOW. Your vestibule is gorgeous! Looks amazing. If it turns out you need a rug just for wiping feet or paws, I’d get something small and solid/neutral. If you definitely don’t need a rug, I’d leave it bare.

Back to swooning over it all …..

Get a good mat outside that can gobble up water and dirt then a tiny one in that pretty entry floor tile . If you must then a small one color mat , a color from the wallpaper or the tile
