Paint questions

last month

I just installed Taj Mahal quartzite and Arizona flash ivory backsplash (still needs to have the grout put in) I want to paint the perimeter cabinets a fresh white color but I am not sure what color to paint them. I also want to paint the island a different color but I am unsure what color to use there as well. The kitchen also needs to be repainted so I could use suggestions for that as well. Any ideas?

Whites, any of them, need to be tested in YOUR light, in your kitchen and why oh why have you installed a backsplash, before you addressed painting the cabinets?!

You are wanting crisp white cabinetry with an ivory back splash? Why? I think you may be "grouting yourself into a corner." with an out of order approach to the kitchen.

The island doesn't need a different color.

You have chosen a "star" in the Taj Mahal. We have no Idea your "Arizona Ivory" At this point? You take a tile to the paint store, test a few whites with your tile and you are looking for the "match" and then you test that white , or several, in the kitchen. The walls can be the same white as cabinets, just lower the sheen to matte finish from the satin on the cabinetry.

Your buggy got way out ahead of your horse.........and don't complicate this further in the belief that every surface needs a different color.

No white can be chosen online. It can only be chosen in your space, viewed in daylight, in the evening ...... and ON your home site.

Painting cabinets isn't like just painting a wall. Cabinets need several steps to get a paint job that won't chip and peel. Cabinets would have been best painted right after you removed the old counter and backsplash.

Nothing wrong with the white you have now ... unless the cabinets are old/worn and need to be painted.

I agree . You have white cabinets you should have chosen a counter that worked with them instaed of now doing this after the fact. IMO you should spent the money on better cabinets first but now you are in a pickle so IMO a white or whatever that works with the counter and do not grout the backsplash until you have made sure that goes with the cabinet color you choose BTW all the same color for the cabinets too.

IMO there is something to be said for uniformity. In other words, I am a fan of having walls, ceiling, cabinetry and trim all the same color. Introduction of too many different whites can just look disjointed.

People often ask us to help pick paint colors and share a picture.

The problem is that pictures are often inaccurate and difficult to interpret.

Depending on how the light is shining on different areas of a room the same color can appear very different than it is in reality. Our brains are used to adjusting what we see under different lighting and we don't notice all the nuanced color changes.

What color is your countertop (1,2 or 3)

What color are your cabinet (1-5)

Overall it looks like the backsplash, counter and cabinets are working well together. Look good where they are close to each other in the picture. Looking at the island and comparing it to the far corner the cabinets and backsplash in the far corner look a bit yellow, but the counter in that far corner also looks more neutral/.yellow (counter 3 vs 2)

I love the counter with the flooring.

I can't pinpoint the issue with the all color - but it feels off to me. The flooring and counter feel rich and the wall color just feels drab in comparison. It is making the countertop feel to pink/violet.

The best way I have found to overcome the issues with the variation of colors in photos is to look at the colors together in natural daylight. In the picture below you can see why the kitchen tile was fighting so much more with the cabinets than the family room tile. Even though the family room and kitchen tiles are similar and looked very much alike in the house the family room tile had more orange and the kitchen tile had more pink The orange and yellow orange wood are not the same but do coordinate. The pink in the kitchen tile is fighting against the yellow orange cabinets and they fought with each other in the house as well - it just wasn't easy to identify why.

If you could take a picture of your countertop sample, a drawer front and a piece of the backsplash outside on a clear day around 2:00 in the afternoon we should be able to better discern if there is an issue with any of the current color choices. If you could include the wall color in the picture that would be great - if you have some touch up paint saved and can paint 2 coats on some heavy weight paper or know the color and can get a paper sample from the paint store . Please also share the name of the wall color if known.

I wouldn't paint the cabinets unless you are seeing issues that we can't see.

The island looks like it is currently black. When you find the right wall color you may want to paint the back of the island the same color, a darker shade of the same color or use an accent color if you have a prevalent accent in the adjoining space.
