Can patio be built without stone edge?

Is the stone edge needed to improve integrity of the patio? Can it be built with just cut edge flagstone, set in sand/gravel/dirt (not concrete)?

This patio is constructed of natural flagstone cut with a saw blade to achieve a tight fit between the stones. The filler is granite breeze. The edger does not need to be strip stone but you will need an edger to keep the filler from leaching out and helps to keep the flagstone from moving. You can use a galvanized edger to perform the same function.
