Define update, please? Do you mean paint the cabinets? Change the counter tops, as you want seating at the peninsula? A rip of the fussy backsplash, I would assume?

These appear to be listing photos, and I'll assume you just bought the house.

I'd not rush, I'd consider if I wanted the microwave over the range, and if there is enough room to extend a counter.

Where is this 'built in desk' it's not in the pictures. Which way are you thinking of expanding the counter? Toward the dining area might be your best bet. What do your lower cupboards look like? I see drawers near your oven, are they all drawers--which indicates this kitchen just went through a redo. I wonder why the cupboards aren't to the ceiling?

If the cabinets are in good shape I would consider replacing the hardware, backsplash and the countertop making the peninsula a bar top. The cabinets look really nice unless they aren't?
