Japanese painted ferns, ostrich ferns

Earlier or later… than say, hosta?

Japanese painted fern is late to emerge: ostrich fern is earlier.

Both of those are up here. About the same time as hosta.

What GG said. Mine Japanese ferns are just barely poking through, while I've seen knee-height Ostrich ferns while walking around in town already.

Doesn't it also depend on where you are located, even for the same species?

I’m z5 NY and neither my Japanese nor my ostrich ferns are up at all.

All my collection of increasingly rare ferns are coming back now, including, most promisingly, the amazing looking Blechnum chilense/Parablechnum cordatum. It required a lot of optimism to think this could survive eastern summers, much less eastern winters. But it's back. It surely might not have made it without the snow cover we had. Some only rate it to zone 8.

I've generally found maritime ferns to be more adaptable to hot summers than other maritime climate plants - it makes sense in a way, obviously. Woodwardia fimbriata grew like gangbusters in the summer here, alas, its first winter outside was one of the OG PV winters, 2013-2014. It wasn't in a very sheltered spot. PNW nurseries seldom offer them: I finally have another one to try in a year or two once it sizes up. If it doesn't make it, I'll give up on that one!

We had a good soaking rain Wednesday afternoon and night, so my ostrich ferns are coming up now and my Japanese painted ferns are just barely peeking out.

I uncovered the mulch and found a few tiny Japanese painted ferns, but they looked’ frozen’ and dead, so not sure, but I’m not getting warm fuzzies

Zone 6 here - Most of my ferns have shown up. Japanese Painted are almost fully opened. i have a couple of 'Ghost' ferns that haven't shown up yet, but I think they come up late?
