Just a gripe...size-wise

As I'm cleaning my closet and dressers and doing a mini-refresh on my clothing in prep for vacay, I just want to gripe. I've been shopping over the last few weeks and have bought clothing that fits in everything from size small to x-large. I'm just saying. There is zero predictability as to what size is going to fit you. Zero.

End of gripe.

Yep! Mens clothing is the same size always. Womens is all over the place, even the same company.

One would think that shoes would not have this problem but in the last month I bought 3 pairs of shoes in 3 different sizes.

And I gripe about it too right along with you all. Clothing and shoes.

You would think that the growth of online clothes shopping, it would finally behoove retailers to standardize. Returns are costly, and the number one reasoni is size and/or bracketing.

Exactly. I bought one top in a L and another in XL...same manufacturer, different color.

And as far as on line, I end up ordering 2 of everything -- one in each size -- so there will definitely be a return. It's most annoying. I'm a retail shopper, but with the decline in stores, I'm forced into the online realm and don't like it for that reason among others. And especially with the cost of fuel skyrocketing, all this transport is ridiculous.

I ordered something from a store and then, because it didn't reach the limit, I ordered something else to get free shipping. So now they are delivering it in 2 shipments! It would've been cheaper for them if they just lowered the shipping limit...instead, now they're paying twice as much. Ridiculous.

    100%

Even when I try "pick up in store," I usually can't

“I'm a retail shopper, but with the decline in stores, I'm forced into the online realm and don't like it ….”

Same. It’s so frustrating with the unpredictable sizing and quality, no matter the brand.

Adidas c-s told me they use different lasts in different countries where their shoes are made. That is why 2 pairs of sneakers I ordered did not fit like the ones I own. Same style same size. What?!

Just adding my name to the list. Most annoying thing!

I don't think there is anyone who buys any clothing who wouldn't agree on both sizing and shipping issues. Nearly every clothing item I buy and every pair of shoes has to be shipped to me. I can go to Nordstrom and have them ship it to the store and make another trip, so it's more efficient, time and fuel, to just stay home and order it myself. I have duplicated my order for sizing. Two or three years ago, I ordered a duplicate of a few items from the same vendor and was surprised how remarkable consistent the sizing was. Different pant styles -- that's a different issue, but same item, no difference. In the last year, the same vendor has been significanty off on same item. I have a shirt upstairs that I need to change the sleeve on -- I really liked it, but in two orders the sleeves were short and shorter. I'm going to make it a 3/4 because I like the color and fabric and got it on sale. If the sleeves had been long enough, I would probably wear them rolled up more often than not anyway.

I do try to return to the stores and combine with other errands. That's about all I can do. Making my own would mean an hour drive to a fabric store and a lot of time and frustration trying to get patterns to fit right (I like sewing - hate fitting) or ordering fabric on line and praying, then possibly ordering more when the fabric arrives as something else. There is no efficient and reliable way.

I have never experienced a wide range like a small to a large.

I am usually either one of two sizes. If a garment looks big, if available I go down 2 sizes.

I'm getting kind of good at it but it is annoying.

Is anyone fooled by vanity sizing?

Lascatz, yes. Sometimes when I'm actually in a store and usually it is pants or jeans, if the first pair is too tight I go back and try on as many in my size. There can be a half inch to one inch difference.

    me , me !

For the time that I worked with a company involved in the design and manufacture of shoes, i learned that changes in fit and quality can occur when one factory replaces another.

This can happen for any number of reasons.

Same for fabric substitutions; decreased availability, price increase, delivery problems.

For shoes, there’s supposed to be quality control, but as far as fit, it depends on whose foot the sample shoe is put. From the fit on that specific foot, approval is given.

    Yes yes yes!

I finally found a pair of jeans that fit me exactly as I want. Bought them in a store while on vacay. When I got home I ordered another pair in a different color/wash. Same style. Different color. Same size as the ones bought in store. They're ok but they don't fit the same as the ones I bought in the store. Why???? Beyond annoying.

I was going to say not me, then remembered I bought a skirt that is a size 2 pretty much because it is a size 2. 🤷‍♀️ I like it a lot but have yet to wear it…..🤔

My husband walks into any store, WM, high end, Harley, or thrift, and walks out with a size large shirt of any style. He never tries on and it always fits.

I agree that DH manages to get pants in his size regardless of manufacturer. He may not like it if it has pleats or the cut of the leg or something, but the consistency in sizing is amazing vs. women's.

Only certain kinds of men's clothes are consistent. But I have things from Boys extra large to men's medium, and my shoe size varies by brand as well.

Isn't there something about wedding dresses (bride and bridesmaids) being more to true sizing where eight may be the fashion size but in a bride's dress all the sudden you are in a 12-14?

You've definitely hit on a frustration that I experience. I also hate that the store will only carry a limited size range in the store, but the wider size range is available online. So, let's say I need a tall in a shirt. I'm forced to order it online and probably pay shipping.

Outside of clothing, I also get angry with all the Williams-Sonoma brands because an item often isn't available EXCEPT online and I'm expected to pay to ship it TO THE STORE for pick-up. I understand paying to ship it to my home (although that annoys me, too, when it's not available in the store). I'll give them a pass on furniture, but not anything else.

I tried on two styles of jeans in the same size this week at Madewell. One pair fit perfectly and I could have lost 30 pounds and still would have not been able to zip up the second pair. The sales person stated that this was due to the level of stretch in the fabric. What??? So frustrating as I agree with above comments that we now often have to order online which is problematic in so many ways.

So W-S charges for ship-to-store? Most stores do not, IMPE.

Maybe they're trying to discourage online orders? 😏

"Mens clothing is the same size always."

That's never been my experience. Sizes and proportions are widely variable. Especially shoes.

Well I received a skirt that I *didn't* order in the bigger size as the site says clearly "runs large". Well it was tight in the waist. So I ordered the large and waited. Got it today, tried it on and it's also tight in the waist. So I compared them. Would you believe the L is less than 1/2" larger in the waist than the M?!? No wonder I'm going crazy.

I hate when that happens - and I always check the size charts - when they're provided. That's something else I hate - when there's no size chart - or the chart only lists sizes that have nothing to do with the item - like it lists the numerical size measurements, but the garment is sized S, M, L, etc. - or vice versa 🤨

I don't buy things when that's the case - I've been burned enough times to know better.
