Why not the long piece along the wall to give more walk space ? No rug IMO and that is ahuge desk both visually and size wise in that small room.

Yes to re-positioning the long part along the wall to the right of the window. How do you even get to the chair right now??? Maybe you hurdle the desk?

Either get the entire room carpeted or no rug at all. It's too awkward for an area rug.

Have you considered turning the desk, as it‘s so squeezed in and room feels off balanced. A rug will also be easier to incorporate.

Either will allow you to add more interest and balance.

I originally wanted it facing outwards bc ita such a nice desk. theres about 22” on the right side to walk thru so it works — i see the images with it to the wall and it doesnt look bad maybe i will try that

We don’t have a rug but we do have a plastic mat thing to protect our hardwood from the dolly chaor

We use these glass mats to protect our wood floors from the chair wheels. My DH got them for his two desk chairs right away. I didn't start out with one, but quickly noticed the wheels were slowly causing wear on the wood floor.

There are a lot of considerations to placing a desk. I assume this is a home office?

1. What direction does the window face? You show the blinds closed - presumably because it's nighttime?

If the sun shines in the window, placement of your laptop/monitor to eliminate glare is an issue. In my east-facing office, if my computer was opposite the window, I had to close the blinds in the morning (but opened them the minute the sun was off the monitors).

2. Do you do a lot of video calls? If so, the background is a consideration. If the bright window is behind your head, your image to others might be just a silhouette.

3. Do you have visitors in your office? If so, having both sides of the L against the walls means that a visitor is essentially behind the desk with you. If the visitor is a client, you may want the barrier of the desk; if it's your daughter, that's not an issue.

4. Is your desk always this neat and tidy? Mine never was - so having the desk facing the wall kept papers from falling off the back.

5. Will anything else go in the office - a file cabinet, printer, bookshelves? That will have an impact on where the desk goes.

Turn the desk to face window. Then measure for the rug.

Comment on glass or acrylic mats for rolling desk chairs: I got acrylic mats for my husband's and my desk chairs, and we used them for a while, until I realized that the chairs rolled so easily on the plastic mats that there was a significant danger that the chair would roll out from underneath me (or my husband) as we bent down to sit on it. The result would be a major injury resulting from smacking rear-first or back-first on the floor. Out went the mats and in came area rugs of appropriate sizes for our two desk-chair areas. Much safer.
