I want to replace this mantle with something more modern and minimal. I don;t know what type of wood woudl go best with the beautiful white and grey marble. The tops of the bookshelves are walnut I think and it would be cool if they matched.

So you want to remove that whole surround ? Yes to that. As for the mantel yes for the walnut if no other surround is being planned and honestly that gray marble really makes no sense at all.

I do want to remove the entire surround but keep the stone. I am going for a more nimimal modern look. and was thinking that the new surround could be painted a grey color to go with the tone or finished in walnut.

You will have to frame out the marble. Float the mantel; replace the glass shelves with the same wood/stain.

If you are keeping the sofas, the fabric color is kind of flat looking. Add throw pillows with lots of white in the print.

Looks like this pillow would work...warmth of the walnut and the brass on the coffee table, some white, gray for the fireplace, and, what looks to me (on my screen) as the color of the sofas.

Once it‘s removed and the walls are painted white, you’ll have a much better sense of how to address, both style and color wise. Is the flooring the same as the shelves? If not and opting for a wood stain, suggest coordinating with the floor.

Since you mentioned you‘d like minimal modern, consider a matching marble trim to create that effect.

Those are some great ideas. I like the marble trim and I might be able to get some of the marble.

I would think about trying to salvage the stone. Its minimal and in the long run you will get more of the look you're seeking if you just replace the entire thing. Often times it cost more to try to work around something than it does to just replace. As far as the built ins i would take them all down to the wood and stain a warm color.

I am planning on saving the marble. The cabinets are MDF and cannot be stained.
