What is the name of the white paint you used? Whites can have various undertones - yellow, gray, tan, green, etc. - so be sure the sofa fabric goes well with it especially if you choose a light fabric.

Before you place a sofa order, look at rugs, drapes, etc. to be sure it all works together.

I would go light in a room with not a lot of natural light . I aslo just like lighter colored sofas usually . I rarely choose all elements before ordering a sofa since it is usually the largest piece and drives the rest of the choices.. The wall color now that it is done is afactor

Are you choosing between the light and dark grays? Because the close-ups look like very similar values (lightness).

Do you have children? The dark probably will show less dirt.

Either of them are very neutral, so you will not find it difficult to match most anything to either of them.

I also like the lighter one.

Here’s one of my couches in my family room. (It’s a very large room so I have two.)

Cream colored couch on a cream colored rug on white oak floors. It’s cloudy today so the wall color looks dull and shadowy but it’s really not. It’s a champagne color.

I have had this couch seven years. I went out last month and bought myself a new reclining arm chair in a tweedy cream color and it matches the couch color perfectly. They are from two different manufacturers.

I would strongly recommend to consider everything else in the room before you choose a sofa. I know you said it is an empty room, but there are so many other factors that you need to consider. I would definitely use a rug as an anchor of the room and maybe that will be the ground for decision making. It is worth to take the time to create a color palette for the space.

Yes, your white oak is lighter than mine, but here’s a better picture of my floors taken nearer the windows. Still cloudy outside. ☹️ The cream couch is away from the windows.

Instead of choosing what’s on trend, they will have the same overall effect color wise as they are so similar. For a family room, I’d choose based on what is more durable. How you accessorize will actually have more of an influence.

@Maureen These two sofas are the same sofa with just different colors. So the fabric is the same. But I do feel the lighter one is a little tighter, but a little thinner than the darker one.

I'd pick the lighter color if you want a softer color palette in the room and then add a bit of contrast through the decor (curtains, pillows, etc.). Darker if you're going for a moodier design or if you have little kids/pets and don't want to baby the couch all the time. The darker couch would go great with some natural wood pieces of furniture throughout the space.

I would likely pick the lighter. Can you share your room? Not the flooring or your current sofa but a view at eye level of the space from multiple angles.

One is a two seater and the other a three seater. Does that make a difference?

Any info on the fabric? I have two wings in a performance fabric, both light gray. My husband's chair isn't looking so great...a very clean man, but body oils are unavoidable, especially on the arms and high back.

I'd go with the darker, if only for that reason.

Whichever one you select, the room will be much more interesting if you add some pattern, color and texture. No more gray anything.

@oncape The fabric is 70% cotton which is very comfy to touch. But I don’t think it is performance. It is sad to hear it is not looking so good. I do have a 9 year boy at home.

70% cotton is oaky as long as the 30% is synthetic. That will bolster the cotton against staining, wrinkles, some fading. If you go light, I suggest some kind of cover for day to day use.

I would go light and leather with a kid then no big deal. The white sofas in these pics are 18 yrs old lived through 15 yrs of international students and 3 huge dogs still looked great when the buyer of our house wanted the furniture becuase it looked like new last year.
