new home build - paint ideas

last month

Seeking input on this color scheme

  • kitchen island: SW dried thyme
  • cabinets: shoji white
  • walls: alabaster

I want it to be warm and welcoming, but still bright. My layout is to the right (AI generated pic) with some subtle differences. (No door). Chairs are exact. Black appliances.

You’re going to put in a big, overdone high-end hood, over a cheapo black highback stove? You want to keep things light, but will have low end black appliances? Makes no sense. Those two appliances look totally out of place.

    Thank you Mark.

I'm afraid that a big black refrigerator will take away from the lightness you're hoping to achieve. Regardless of the finish, I'd recommend planning on a cabinetry surround for your fridge so you don't see the sides, and make sure the over-fridge cabinets are deeper (further forward) so that they're easier to reach.

Look at the difference in the refrigerators and surrounding cabinetry in the pictures below. If you want a high end look (and who wouldn't since you're spending lots of money on an update!) a refrigerator surround looks much better.

Check manufacturer's recommendtions for the air circulation requirements around certain appliences.

Is the kitchen open to the living area?

Mark makes a great point about air circulation. For whatever model you choose, be sure to check the installation / user guides for specifications - usually space is required behind, above, and to the sides. And pay attention to space needed to open the doors fully (enough to pull out shelves and drawers.)

    You need a dark countertop.

Your cabinet white is too white for the black appliances. Black appliances are just that....black...stark.

Here are schemes that work with B.M. Black...probably one of the blackest blacks there is.

There was a comment made about the stove. Do the appliances come with the build? If you can upgrade it, I suggest you do. Either way, consider doing something like this..

You don't have to have tile all around the counters. A good washable paint finish is just fine as a substitute.

The range you're showing with controls at the back is a freestanding range. A model as a part of a counter is a slide-in version. With a tile or metal covering behind it if there;s a wall. Induction ranges are a version to look at.

I think it really depends on the lighting in the space - I did my white cabs in SW dover white, same color as my trim throughout the whole house - it’s just the right white for the house based on lighting
