Door frame advice

Hi, everyone. Would appreciate some advice: I’m renovating my kitchen and I don’t know what to do about this door frame. Currently, the trim around it is uneven (the right sided trim and the top trim is 3.5 in and the left sided trim is 2.5 in). The cabinets go up to the trim. Do I a) make the trim evenly narrower on all sides, or b) make an archway and remove the trim altogether? Does this doorframe look too narrow for an archway? If you do recommend an archway, do you recommend a more rounded or flat arch? Thanks in advance for your advice!

prefer a cased [ trim] style opening. I think the edges hold up better compared to no trim. do you anticipate moderate or even heavy traffic? keep some trim. I would not extend the upper cab any wider, so if you want the trim the same size all around you can do that. Houses have funny things ..the uneven trim doesnt bother me. barely noticed it.

I like the trim, and most wont even notice that it is narrower on one side. I have the same situation with a laundry cabinet, and my back door trim. my narrow is on the left. In the 17 yrs of living in this house, not one person has ever noticed it, even the few times, I pointed it out.

I like the arch. What caught my eye, though, is the dining table/chairs, when looking at it from kitchen side. The dining set is off center...I know this sounds weird, but it would drive me nuts.

It is like a picture frame, with a photo askew. : > }

Thats a narrow passage. I'd take out the cabinet to the right and increase the opening width. New 3.5" frame all sides.

Is the 3rd picture (rectangular doorway, doesn't match described casing dims) existing, or none of those are existing? Does your house currently have any "arches" or plaster cove crown in it? What are other doorway openings (ones without a door), cased or drywalled?

The 3rd pic is existing. I have no other arches and all my doorway openings are trimmed. I wonder if this might be a better option? Just extend opening to ceiling with minimal drywall extending past cabinets. Would just have to verify not load bearing wall…

Laura, I think you’re on to something. If you can extend the opening to the ceiling, it’ll be less confining, and make the opening appear wider, less narrow than it actually is.

I would not add an arch if you have no arches elsewhere in the house.

I also don't think the existing doorway/trim is a big problem, but opening the entire area looks good in the rendering. However, your cabinets don't go to the ceiling--how would you treat that? Are you planning on adding trim to close that gap as you show in the rendering?

Now that more shows I'd change the layout by deleting the peninsula in favor of a straight counter with the dw to the left of the sink. The counter to the left of the far doorway is unused. I'd move the frig there and get the frig space as counter over drawers for a very usable work zone next to the range.
