Do you use a sleeping eye mask?

I googled this earlier, and now I'm seeing ads for cosmetic eye masks. I'm talking about the masks used for sleeping. About 1-2 nights/week, I work later in the evenings. My schedule is mostly flexible, and I prefer working when it's quiet around here. I'd like to sleep in the following mornings, but am often wakened prematurely by light coming through the window. This isn't enough to hang blackout curtains, but I'm considering a sleeping mask.

If you wear one, are they difficult to get used to? Do you bother with eye creams at night? Is there a particular type that you prefer?

I don’t but DH does. He uses a Blissy brand one. I have Blissy silk pillowcases for when I get my hair done. The masks seem to work for him, and we wash them in the lingerie type laundry bags.

I use one once in a while, especially when I wake up very early. Mine is kind of a foam material and is adjustable with a velcro strap. Sometimes the velcro gets stuck in my hair but its not a big problem. The part that covers my eyes kind of bulges out so its not pressing on my eyes. The ones they give you on an airplane are flat across your eyes and you cant blink.

Just my regular moisturizer at night.

Dawning light always wakes me up. On a morning I'm not working and may want to sleep late to 7:30 or 8, a sleep mask is very effective for me, but I don't like wearing one all night. I leave out my mask at bedtime and at some point before or at dawn will slip it on. My favorite mask is molded with somewhat rounded eye 'cups' so it doesn't sit tight accross one's eyes which I like much better. I've not yet found another like it so I have to guess flat masks don't bother most people. I don't recall having any problem getting used to wearing one. I don't wear any eye cream so no issues there. Good luck!

Edited to say there were no responses when I started my answer - ded's mask seems like mine, but she describes it better. Mine has velcro as well and it is a big problem for me so I wrap a tissue or paper towel around the entire strap several times which solves that issue for months before it needs replacing.

i use one. We have room darkening shades in one home so don’t need light control there but I simply like wearing one. I think it helps my quality of sleep. I really appreciate them when we’re traveling and in our second home where we have yet to install room darkening shades.

i don’t use an eye cream but do use other skin care products which I allow to thoroughly absorb before going to bed.

I have several different styles and fabrics but find I reach for those accumulated from long haul flights as much as any.

Thanks for these suggestions! Indigo, I plan on doing as you're doing--having it available when I want to slip it on. I'm pretty good at being able to fall back asleep. And on cloudy mornings, I don't need one.

I appreciate the link, Bbstx. I'm a side sleeper, too!

Always for traveling as DH likes a night light in a hotel room. Many nights at home as there's ambient light from the security control panel in my room. It does seem to yield a deeper sleep.

I just use ones from the airline kits that provided them. As long as they aren't too tight, or too loose, it doesn't matter. They work.

Yes, on occasions where it is particularly important for me to be well rested. I have tons of freebies. They vary very much in quality by airline and first vs business. I throw out the polyester ones, may of which offgas, to add insult to injury. I like a soft cotton, and I like generous coverage of the eye area.

Weighted eye masks are also a lovely option IME.

Never. i have no trouble sleeping thus far. i like a little light in our bedroom or adjoining bathroom. We even have the arch top glass panes on our bedroom windows which are uncovered but I wake up right around the same time every morning. No alarm unless i need to be up earlier. TBH, a sleeping mask would probably drive me crazy haha!

Yes! I love mine. It took me awhile to get used to it, but now I can’t sleep without it. I use the myhalos brand and bought it on the big A. I need the 3D foam kind so I can open my eyes underneath I guess. But this is total darkness. I use my regular face and eye creams and don’t notice any issues. I haven’t tried to wash this one yet though. I had a couple of a similar brand that would break down in the washing machine. I think I’ll just hand wash this one when it needs it.

Sometimes, when I'm trying to sleep in - light bothers me too.

Hubby found some good ones at the big A and ordered one for himself and me. They're similar to the ones bbstx shared, but ours are a bit narrower, and I wish the strap went a bit lower in back, but all in all it's much better than the wimpy satin ones I had before. It has a little flap over the nose that really keeps the light out.

DD has machine washed her mask with no ill effects. I suppose she put it in a mesh bag, but maybe not. Sometimes she’s more careful than others.

I almost always use a mask when flying overnight across the pond. And i use ear plugs too, usually just the soft ones you can mold and fit into your ear, and I toss them later. I find both useful in a hotel also when there might be a light outside sneaking in or noises that can keep me awake.

I do. I tried one years ago on an international flight, and I was hooked. I used to use the 3D foam kind, but it became uncomfortable at some point. I then switched to the Blissy silk one. I wash it on cold in a lingerie bag and air dry it.

I don't remember why an eye mask, but I was asked to make one as part of a bridal shower gift. I made a plain one for myself out of curiosity and have used it a few times over 5-6 years. It's a very fine weave, satin smooth cotton. I was able to make the elastic the length I wanted so I can run it under my hair so it is less likely to pull off and it still isn't tight. I may have put it on when I went to sleep once, but the other times it has been used to go back to sleep. I know mine is all cotton and washable, so I have tossed it in a mesh bag and then hang it to dry. My oldest son has blackout curtains and still uses one frequently -- might have been part of my curiosity about them.

If you know anyone who sews, they are an easy make and you can customize the fabric and fit to your preferences.

The myhalos one I like is on sale for Prime Day today for $7.99.

Lascatx, you noted my requirements--I don't want it to impact my hair, because I'm a firm Day 2 hair gal. I'll probably never put it on at the start of the night, but will reach for it toward morning, which means I'm overthinking the eye cream treatment issue. But it still needs to be washable.

    Thanks, Lego--I'm looking now.

Late to the party, but a friend gave me this NodPod and I really like it. I mostly use it when I go back to bed in the early morning and it is light out. I like how it is weighted and you can drape it over your face. Does not mess with the wig either!
