Look the photos of the rows-so much color! Blood of the Martyrs has such rich color. Sweeten Creek is a nice yellow. The Buddy’s Victoria Jade seedling is beautiful-indeed nice and flat. Great color on it as well.

Kate - Yes, Blood of the Martyrs is a rich color. It has a double dose of Soli Deo Gloria in it, but the plant habit is so much better.

I like Burnt Hickory, what a great color and perfect edge. Wow, so much digging you did for your daylilies! These old bones here couldnt do that any more. Transplanting is the limit now. I understand having to dial back a bit but I hope you still enjoy hybridizing……I enjoy seeing the results!

Sherry - I did do a lot of digging to plant those daylilies. But somehow I haven't been able to dig any more beds. I have around 25 potted that sorely need to be in the ground, but my leg and back pain prevent me from digging more at this time. I also have a lot of seedlings in cups that may or may not get planted by fall.

I love your rows of daylilies. Lovely mix of colors blended in with each other. I do like your Burnt Hickory so I went and looked it up on the other garden forum and most of the ones posted are deeper in color but location/soil make a big difference. Wait for more buds to open and see if the color gets deeper.

Have you thought of hiriing someone to prep the new bed rows for you? I wouldn't let them plant anything but at least get the row in place with the soil (raised beds?) and leave the mulch for you to add when convenient after planting. I know labor is not cheap. Don't you have someone mowing for you? Hope you find a solution to get the rest of your "kids" planted.

Julia - I have thought about hiring landscapers to make a raised bed in the front yard and another border bed along one of my fences in the back. I'll have to get some estimates on those.

Julia and Sherry - About Burnt Hickory?, I looked at the photos closely on NGA, and while some of them are closer in color to my plant, none has the edge mine has. I got the plant from Sterrett Gardens and looked at all of their other orange daylilies, but none looks like mine. There have been several other blooms on the plant and they all looked similar to the picture, except unable to open all the way. We'll see what it looks like in future years.

I was impressed when Burnt Hickory first appeared, but later saw pictures that looked like it was a fader, so have passed on it so far. From looking over the years at Waldrops intros, it doesn't look like his emphasis is on being colorfast. Just to my eyes, but to me the form looks the same, but the color is lighter. In your climate that is odd to have it fade to that level. In mine it would probably be a mid to later PM picture and I'd figure that was about right.........So you still have Sweeten Creek. I was trying to think of the name of that Hensley yellow I grew the other day. Thanks for the reminder. I do remember that it was a rebloomer for me when not much else is........Love the last seedling. Any seedling that looks like Mary's Baby is gorgeous in my eyes. I hope it continues to prosper for you........Your beds look so colorful. Do you have Fescue or Bermuda at your home?.............Maryl

Maryl - The "Burnt Hickory" photo is from the morning. The bloom did not fade by 10 a.m. in 60-degree temps. I don't know what type of grass is here. I know it's not Bermuda. Bermuda does not survive this far north. I'm glad you like the last seedling. It is similar in color to Mary's Baby. It's an evergreen.

It is a year in which colors can be odd, and even more so heights. I would take heights this year with a grain of salt. However, I have some plants that have shrunk severely (even while others shot up). The winter may have done some culling. White Tooth looks good. Alas, here, poor Dennis Russell has some scapes near 30, and flowers are not opening correctly. A weird season.

Mantis - I agree this is an odd season. The winter certainly showed me a couple of seedlings I should cull.
