The ring I tried on was too big. They could size it for me or order me a new one. That latter offer totally changed my sense of urgency. I want to think about this long and hard, if I will wear it every day.

I am in NYC today, an only blocks from the diamond district, but that can be a scary place LOL! It's quite something if you've never been. And then there is the long-standing contender, the anti-bling:

I also came across this chain-like one from John Hardy that I like, below. The reason I chose a 3 band rolling Cartier ~30 years ago was because I liked the idea that it represents me, DH, and our children.

Lastly, I was going to visit my local jewlere who has done repairs for me and who bought my miscellany.

If I were dressing up to go to the office every day, I'd buy the "eternity" one in a heart beat. Just not sure about it at this stage of life.

@sheeisback, never had an issue with finger pinching. I guess it could happen if you were pulling up and trying to close the band at the same time. It is a small mechanism, so no real room to close it with skin in the way.

@Kswl, yes definitely for rings with design/stones on the upper half of the ring.

I have always had a small finger base in comparison to my knuckles, so I would never buy a ring with design/stones all the way around as they just don't fit well and feel uncomfortable. These shank modifications aren't just for old age and infirmity ... I got my first one in my late 20's!

If you see a young bride complaining about how her diamond ring is always spinning and won't stay up ... tell them about these products!

I came across this design years ago and saved it. It was something I was considering when I reset my original engagement stone. I didn't need any more rings so I had a pendant made. But this design can easily be modified to handle different stones.

Did anyone learn growing up that the actual wedding band should be plain and unbroken by stones as your vows should be unbroken? I am not sure where that came

Yes, it's actually a tradition in Jewish weddings. I got married in a simple unbroken band and then changed to a diamond band after the ceremony.

I love bands - rolling or stacked. That ebay one is pretty and esp w/ mix of metals. My band has a knife edge which has always bothered me.

I shall consult heavily w my girls, since it will be their someday and I like thier taste and POV. They did like the one in my OP.

One thing, I may want to wait till i get to my goal weight to determine my ring size. I'm only about 7 lbs away; not sure if that could matter?

Not sure that 7lb will make a difference-- but larger losses are definitely making a difference for me. I really need to find a solution for 2 of my better rings. I have been able to move other rings around on my fingers.

Interestingly, I showed my DD1 the "EBay" ring above, and she loved it. Her response (with the proper punctuation) : OMG I love it I'm obsessed I want it tomorrow.

So now I am thinking about that one.

The advantages:

1. one of a kind

2. just a soupcon of bling so feels less OTT at the grocery store

3. echoes my original, lost wedding band but is still unique

Disadvantages:

1. custom, so prob more money, def, longer lead time

2. Probably impossible to resize in the future

3. does not scratch my long-standing eternity ring itch

Next steps:

1. talk to local jeweler about who can make this

2. get pricing and timing

3. think about what I'd want engraved on the band.

First, congratulations—-7 lbs to go! That is fantastic! I know what that represents as I struggled to lose my ”pandemic pounds”… it was hard. Second, I will say that as you approach your goal, the number of pounds between sizes is MUCH smaller— like 7 lbs between sizes 4 and 6 vs 10 pounds between 10 and 12. And (in my case, anyway) my hands and feet got measurably smaller as I approached that goal, even smaller than my pre-gain sizes. So you might just want to wait 🤷‍♀️ Full disclosure— after I hit my goal I was so motivated that I decided to move the goalpost to my college weight (another 10 pounds) and then I started golfing and after all that was very glad I had a diamond band with stones that did not go all the way around!

Of course this is your decision and your (to-be) ring, but personally I wouldn’t put a lot of weight into what my 20-something daughter may want to inherit one day. My tastes have changed a lot since I was that age…don’t you think theirs will too? I think you should get what you want to wear for the next 20-30 or so years.

Too bad we can’t rent rings for, say, a month, to see how they feel over time. Obviously I have ring issues…like a sensitivity. I can’t wear rings that are too big, too bulky, or that have moving parts! Also can’t seem to wear more than one on each hand. I have tried a little pinky ring and couldn’t even handle that.

I am also not a jewelry person. I never take my ring off. DH had suggested getting another band to wear with the engagement ring, or an eternity ring, but I just was not motivated to even look. To each his own......I used to wear another ring on my right ring finger but now ( as of the last I don't know maybe 15 years or so) I only wear my engagement ring. I will throw on another necklace or bracelet at times, but rarely remove the necklace I wear all the time ( sleep, shower, beach etc)...

So I am not a jewelry person but I too think if I would get another ring, I really do like the one Maire posted above.

Oh I do! I really trust their opinions and often give them the last word when I can't decide on clothing for example. They are really thoughtful about it too and I appreciate that. I am kind of joking about the inherit part, but not joking about the fact that we have similar tastes and I really appreciate a younger POV. When I ask my friends, I am getting a narrow demographic opinion. And of course I found the ring myself so it isn't as though it came out of thin air.

In essence, yes - this was my original Cartier wedding band. I wore it ~18 years before I lost it. I was heartbroken. I used to tell DH that if only we could pick up the house and shake it, I think it was there somewhere.

As far as I can tell, the ring on EBay was made by an Italian jeweler some time ago and no longer available, so it would need to be custom. The not-quite-eternity ring in my OP is more of an open question as to comfort but it felt fine in person though obviously only briefly.

I agree tastes change. But in re the Ebay ring I have liked a very similar ring for 27 years; the engraving is a rift on it. And I have liked eternity rings for as long as I can recall; but the ones I liked were always tens of thousands of dollars and I just cant condone that; this one is more reasonable since it is partial and the stones are smaller yet enhanced with a halo.

I have my original wedding ring set. I remember the day my husband (then fiancé) and I went to the jeweler to pick out a band to have made. i have never wanted to replace my rings or upgrade; I guess I am sentimental! I am another who will only wear one ring on each hand.

I agree! for example I would never change my engagement ring.

What you may have missed is that I lost my original wedding band about 10 years ago. I replaced it with this band, another iconic Cartier design. This ring is now too big, and it can be resized but the method is suboptimal IMHO. The spacing of the design is an issue so essentially they "pad" the ring inside, if you will. Thus I am thinking of replacing it.

I like the 3 ring look (i have looked at the much more simple Tiffany version). I might be inclined to put the engraving on the inside ring but on the outside it will be more distinctive.

I havent looked to have my rings resized .. it is too early. One is a very thick band and I suspect the options are minimal. For the other I suspect there are options but I might be ready for a new setting for the diamond. I am down 2lb today but I suspect it will be another 40lb before I can think about resizing!

Interestingly (to some of us at least!), the Alfieri & St. John ring ("ebay") is not the customary rolling ring design. One ring has a sort of pocket in it that holds the other ring. I've not seen that before.

I thought of going to a store that carries that brand, but only one in NA is in Mexico. Nothing in the US at all. But there are tons of retailers in Europe. And, Kazakhstan. LOL

I’m a “less-is-more” person when it comes to jewelry most of the time. Around the time I first got married, I knew a very classy and well-to-do woman-older than me at the time-who made a big impression on me. She always wore just a wedding ring on her left hand (of course), along with a wide gold band on her right hand...and a Rolex. As soon as hubby and I were fortunate enough to acquire that (it’s been many years now), that’s exactly what I’ve worn for everyday wear. So...pretty simple. I normally just wear diamond studs every day. Nowadays, I do add a slim silver band that coordinates with my gold wedding ring, plus one of my various silver rings on my left hand when I’m wearing silver. I also bling it up with a small necklace or two and some bracelets when I go out with friends. I cannot wear any jewelry at all to bed.

I inherited my mom’s wedding ring after she passed away. Her original setting was a little outdated for my taste by the time I got it-but with a beautiful solitaire diamond, so I had a new modern setting made-which is now my wedding ring.

When I go to western-type events, I have a collection of turquoise jewelry/belts to go with those outfits, which is always an exception and sometimes a necessity, depending on the event.

I follow this jeweler on IG and would love to have something like this done with a bumch of my loose stones. It’s a different kind of bling.

My fine watches just sit. It seems silly to wear them when IRL my phone gives me the time. My DH disagrees and wears his watches most days. Luckily my DDs want my best watches. I recently donated some too.

Random rings from family, stones from gold I sold many years ago and stuff I won’t wear ever. Jewelry really isn’t my thing, but I seem to be the end-point in the chain of ownership.

I don’t mind wearing a watch every day at all. It’s a habit for me, I guess. I feel naked without one. Personally, I rarely see women without a watch around here. Why dig my phone out of my purse when I can just glance at my wrist? Plus, it's just pretty. And, I like pretty.

We inherited a basic 1980’s Rolex with a full set of paperwork, box and extra links. DH hates them, so I’ll have it serviced to sell.

We also received a 1960’s gold Longines cocktail watch and it’s being serviced. The face is covered so being that its different, I might keep it.

Also in that group was a beautiful art deco ladies watch that I’ll keep for its look and some other gold cases & bands which I will sell for the metal value.

Funny, this was not a wealthy family, but they also kept the ”good stuff” across generations.

I wear my watch 24/7 and I think it is pretty, but also durable and water resistant, so one watch for all occasions. Two tone gold, with diamond bezel & number markers, and MOP face. I feel naked without the weight of the watch on my left wrist!

No watch here either. i havent worn one in years. I do wear bracelets on one arm.

I got the diamonds for my diamond stud earrings in the NY diamond district. I paid cash which I had tucked in a flat wallet inside my waistband...so scared should I be assaulted, but I wasn't. It was a good deal though!

I stopped wearing my tank watch for the Apple years ago. On really dressy occasions I don’t wear the Apple watch but replace it with a four strand pearl bracelet with a big, gaudy art deco diamond clasp on my left wrist. I love my Apple watch!

The diamond district is very short stroll from my office. I personally have never been impressed by their prices ... I think you need to know a guy who knows a guy, maybe. If online indications are anything, the price there for a custom ring similar to my idea would be far in excess of Cartier (which of course does not do any custom work).

It took almost a month to decide. But I ended up, umm, buying three rings. The first one, the one I saw in the jewelers' window when we were away. The second one, the pave and engraved rolling ring I found used on Ebay. The third one, a custom version of that rolling ring.

Ring one; my new wedding band for dressier occasions (ie not the grovery store). I may have to start getting manicures to live up to this ring.

Ring Two: A vintage ring from Italy. I bid aggressively and got it 30% off on Ebay. It was returnable. The ring is too big on me and hard to resize. One of my DDs luvs it. I am keeping it and will give it to her as a gift at some point. This ring looked 10x better in person; they should fire their photographer.

Ring 3 - In addition to ring 2 being too large for my finger, I would prefer that the bands are a tad wider/thicker and, of course, will have the gold band (which currently says, "i entrust my love to you" in Italian) custom engraved. DH is working on that part. My local jeweler borrowed the ring to give me an estimate and on that basis I am going ahead.

This will be my new everyday wedding band when it is done. It closely echoes, without duplicating, the ring that I lost a decade or so ago, my original 3ring rolling ring that was one pave and 2 gold rings.

The first ring is exquisite! Why not wear it every day? It is to be enjoyed and admired.

The vintage Italian ring is really unusual and the back story makes it perfect. My jeweler wears a 3 gold band Cartier so I know how it rolls. The vintage Italian ring though is much more interesting. I could easily be wrong but it appears that only the middle engraved gold band rolls. It really is a great ring for everyday wear and I hope your jeweler is able to re-create it the way you want.

They are all lovely and I just want to add to the chorus of people who would wear #1 as an every day ring. No need to wait for dressier events.

@gsciencechick I got an insert (bolero 😁)for my 20th wedding anniversary also.
When my daughter got married I had the insert (really don’t know if that’s the proper name lol maybe it’s wrap. I had the jeweler cut it in half and I gave one half to my daughter to wear with her solitaire. I have only one daughter. I love seeing it on her every time I see her. We kinda match, well sort of, I have a pear diamond solitaire and she has a round diamond solitaire, but you get my drift 😁 My feeling was why wait till I am gone to give it to her. She has two daughters, so when I am gone she can have the other half and hand them down to her daughter’s. Until then when everyone sees our hands, it becomes a conversation starter.
