Need ideas for decor on kitchen shelf

My daughter is renting a house and in the kitchen there is an upper shelf over the kitchen window. She would like to display something on it but doesn’t have any ideas. I was thinking maybe white ceramic pottery? I would love some ideas!

Sorry, it’s not the best picture.

I wouldn't go out and buy anything new to display,

but if she has something packed away, put it on display. no more than three single pieces, differing heights.

    Thank you!

Hard to tell the height of the space. If she searches “narrow shelf above kitchen window”, there are a lot of ideas on Pinterest, but suggest using minimal items.

I’m not sure what the dimensions of the shelf is but, I agree whatever she puts up there should be minimal. Thanks for your input!

There is not much room up there- in terms of the distance from the shelf to the ceiling. So, there is not really any room for an impactful display.

In most any case, though, I would not suggest placing things on a shelf such as this- even if there were more height and depth, than the one in question. God forbid the stuff falls on someone’s head. And I have to believe this is not good feng shui... i.e. the conscious or unconscious uneasy feeling that one could possibly have- with there being stuff positioned over their head like this. So, I would suggest that your daughter maybe just consider some remote-controlled puck lights- and some which could be attached in as minimally invasive way as possible- since she is renting. She can check Amazon and read reviews.

The puck lights would be a cool idea! I was also thinking a few baskets….that way if they accidentally fell down, they wouldn’t hurt anyone…

The baskets are a brilliant idea. 👌🏼

Maybe she could start with a couple of puck lights and then see if she wants anything else. Having some negative (empty) space can be nice.

I’ll mention the lights to her. I think it’s a great start.

Since you say its a rental it sadly can't be removed despite it being a poorly designed feature. I would leave it alone. No reason to draw attention to it. There is a can light above which hopefully gives ample light and the shelf doesnt disturb the lights path.. Ignore the shelf so the eye passes right on by.

Nothing …. but take my answer with a grain of salt since I’m more of a minimalist. i like simple, dislike clutter.

I really dislike the shelf too, and honestly, I didn’t even notice the canned lights. lol.

She could get a roman shade that has no drill hardware or hangs on a tension curtain rod and mount it at the level of the bottom of the crown moulding then have it hang striaght down sitting flush with the cabinet fronts and covering the shelf completely as if it isnt there. just skim right over it with the shade.

    ^Good idea from DIS.

How about adding puck lights on TOP of the shelf, pointing up? Light can bounce off the ceiling, maybe for nice ambient light? They don’t even have to be mounted, just set on it.
