What Do You See?

Like sand through an hour glass , time marches on. There was a point when time seemed less frantically fractured, when life felt a bit less hurried. Design didn't "suddenly" make you feel as if you wanted or needed some massive revolution within your home.

Trends and fads have always been just that. They are different, you take your pick and leave behind what may be just not "you". This is no different than skinny pants versus those that look as if they may far better suit a 6'6" model in her teens: ) and make the rest of us appear double wide.

One thing is apparent as evidenced by the mass market retailers. Cool has warmed. Tradition is no longer to be relegated to old ladies. Your "brown" whatever it is, .....hey ..maybe not so granny?

If you're a designer, you can remember a time when what you felt should be available, that what was feeling done to death had done its time and that which you wanted never seemed to be in sync. That lag has been nearly erased, to BOOM., I felt it, and here it is!

What do I mean in a visual? Below a mere handful from two retail sources. It was not quite overnight, this "organic modern" morph....but it was speedier than many trends before and in decades past..

Less iron, less glass, less white, Less pale, less GRAY. Less sparkle and glitz, less white/black , less ,less, less, to m.o.r.e wood, darker by a lot, more warm stone. Have fun and keep going!

The very recent acceptance of green after who knows how long and how much indigo? Gazing below, do you see it? : ) and where dearie, did all that olive go, oops, yes a smidge, floral no less!

Arhaus and RH Modern ......

Exactly.................

Ready?! 2200.00 below.......

I can do more.......I stopped with just two sources,

Interesting you mention Arhaus. Until a few years ago they still displayed some fun color/pattern in their showroom pieces, had transitional furniture styles and had interesting/unique decor items, but they went through a re-design and the showrooms started to look like RH with a more modern minimalist style, of course, all in gray & white. It will be interesting to see if they pivot back to transitional styles and patterns/color, after spending all that money, quite recently, for their new look and branding.

And back in 2000 most of us probably had a table like that somewhere in the house and many most likely donated it sometime around 2010, when the gray trend really kicked into high gear and traditional brown furniture went out of favor.

I never had one, but my mother still does! Not sure when she got it or how old it really is. Hers is probably an antique.

Off to look at Arhaus website ...

Wow, interesting that Arhaus has brought back many of the styles they had just discontinued in the last 3 years with their change to the white/gray/modern branding. I hope they fired whoever suggested they follow the herd, or promoted the person who told them to quickly go back to what had made them popular to begin with! No one needed an RH-lite!

I cannot imagine being influenced to put gray in my home. I had my colors done in the 70s when it was all the rage and it confirmed what I already knew. I am a Fall. Fall all the time in my world from my clothes to my makeup to my carpets to my furniture. Jan's pics are a tish on the dark side. I'm not going to ever embrace a cave either. Browns are rich and versitile and yes takes us back to real, natural wood!! I LOVE IT! The cover of that magazine seems to be suggesting faux paint treatment on the walls. Sorry I won't ever do that again!! Keep the walls light, palest of yellow reads white in a room dressed for fall. Embracing Fall also allows for a return to textures. Lets let go of shiny and matt and find a neutrual middle that will wear well and not show every imperfection.

Yikes! A return of faux paint treatments ... say it ain't so!

I've an Arhaus very near my home . I popped in the other day, scored two floor sample Walsh leather swivel/glide chairs for a client at half price, as they were "flipping" the floor to all new as of yesterday.

Staggering..... was pricing on new items. Coffee table for 7k? Rugs...14K? There is a lot of wealth in this town, and I have not ONE client who would not balk at a 7k cocktail table,

At any rate, RH and Arhaus aside, not really my point. It is more the much faster pace of entire flips in palette and general feel in design, and at the same time? Uniformity. to the maximum.

Its as fast as couture clothing design, finding its way to a rolling rack hauled through the throng on Seventh Avenue decades ago. .......in low dollar knock offs destined for the Macy;s and then the discount joint two weeks later at lower yet pricing with inferior fabric and construction..

I found this very telling, rather insightful in a way....RH intro below

As if to say, here's the warm hug you need and want. Here is the escape from the harsh world you inhabit, courtesy of constant connection to tech, small bite conversations, meals eaten with your nose in a phone. All you need to do is buy warm earth tones, add crunch, get some stuff that looks a bit more like the stuff Grammy offered you

before she went to assisted living: ) ? except hers was free, and the little bistro table is 2200.00 - more in line with the sofa price that made you and 70 % of the USA hurl?

The larger point? Do we all want the same house, at ANY price? Are you going to sit and cry that you dumped perfectly great BROWN case goods for gray wash just a moment ago and now its a bloody fortune for at best... one third the quality?

The powers have declared brown furniture is DEAD .You can't give it away.!!! Not even consignment will take it!

    Williams Sonoma...

    Arhaus...........10, 600 all below.

    Just saying : )

    Serena and Lily?

You could have had that sideboard back there??

    Brown is DEAD........lol

So everything's gone from gray and white to sepia tones. Reminds me of when you would dress up in 1800's clothing and get your picture taken at an amusement park to look like you were living on the frontier. It's not for me.

Okay, so are you saying that coastal blues, light woods and airy shutters and drapes are going out of style? That my maple cabinets and brown speckled granite are back in when I thought yesterday was dated? Bah. Style is whatever resides in your heart. Makes you smile when you enter a room. When you walk into your blue, white, and beige coastal bedroom, and immediately feel relaxed and say ‘ahhhh,’ I think that is what matters most. Not the latest trend that RH and Arhaus are dictating.
