Sorry, showing off again

My youngest grandchild just turned 7 and wanted to go to the zoo for her birthday. So, of course I had to make her a zoo themed birthday cake.

If I must say so myself, the zoo cake was pretty awesome. Check it out:

It was made with one 9x13 cake, a double layer 8” round cake and a double layer 6” round cake.

As you can see in the pic below, even the inside of the cakes was zoo themed.

The 8” cake had zebra stripes, the 9x13 was tiger striped and (not shown) the 6” cake was leopard spots. The fences around the exhibits were hazelnut wafer sticks. Snake size Kit Kat bars were used to divide the animal areas and for the train tracks. I fashioned my GD’s name out of homemade fondant. The water for the polar bear and hippo exhibits was homemade gel that I dyed blue.

I have to admit that this cake design is not mine. I found it on the internet. It was fun to duplicate it.

I have 7 months until the next granddaughters birthday. Wonder what that cake will be.

So cute! Such great memories for them.

How long did it take you to make, and how do you keep it from drying out before party?

Thanks everyone. The cakes are fun to bake and decorate but they are a lot of work.

Allison0704, I usually make the cakes 2 to 3 weeks ahead of time. I wrap the individual unfrosted cakes/layers in Saran/cling wrap and then wrap them in foil and freeze them. I thaw the cakes the day I‘m going to decorate them. I keep the layers wrapped while thawing them. It prevents condensation from forming directly on the cake.

I also make the frosting a few days ahead of time.

I decorate the cakes the day or night before the party. I cover them loosely and they have never dried out.

I have taught my grandaughters some frosting and piping techniques and they are getting pretty good at it.

Here are their first cakes done all by themselves 4 years ago.

They have improved a lot but are still not ready for any of the kids baking shows on tv.

It looks fantastic even to my old and jaded eyes. To a 7 year old, it must be positively magical.
