ISO good replacement hose connectors

I've found replacement hose connectors to fall into one of two types.

First, the ones where you're supposed to push the end of the hose over a tube on the back of the connector and fix it in place with a clamp. I've found that the hose diameter is always too small to fit. Push hard to make it go on, and it folds up on itself instead.

Second, the ones where you put a plastic ring over the hose end, slip the hose end over a tube on the back of the connector, and screw the ring onto the connector to seal the joint and fix the tube in place. These go together with the greatest of ease, but they come apart again if you look at them funny. Yesterday I had one gush water out of the connector around the outside of the hose.

What's your experience with these things? Have you found a brand or design that works well?
