Random comment I had to post on the internet

So the NYT weddings are a guilty pleasure.

I am reading one about a well known podcaster and her private-equity-in London husband, whose 3rd date was in Paris, yada yada yada.

Get this:

We just connected on so many levels we didn’t expect,” he said. They discovered they both grew up in middle-class families

    Oh brother.

I think I've had enough of the internet for today.

    Hard eye roll at that!

I love the Times weddings. And these two seemed perfect for each other. I liked the part about their "quiet moment together" on a speedboat.

“Quiet moment? On a speedboat? Lol!

Eye roll at the whole idea that personal things have to be out there for everyone to hear/read.

    Middle class?? The horror!

yes, and what are the odds! It's uncanny!

One of my sister’s who now lives a beautiful, gracious, very upper class life seems to have amnesia of her middle class childhood. Will staunchly say that she cannot recall many events that all the others do remember. I truly think she’s mortified at the clean, organized, properly dressed but not House Beautiful world she grew up in.

    Middle class? OMG, ew. 😉

    So, no pre nup?

    Podcaster ... says it all.

It's actually depressing how shallow things like this have gotten.

It's not just that is it shallow, it also makes no sense.

Observing that two people share something extraordinarily common and mundane as an example of how you "connected on so many levels" seems to suggest you did not connect on so many levels.

And then there is the fact that it could bruise egos in their families.

My DH says the NYT reporter's choices here seem to suggest disdain for their subject, as they had to know how it badly it would come off.

Oh they knew, all right, I can guarantee it.

When I first started as a newspaper reporter in news I made friends with a feature writer about my age who covered social events as part of her beat. She was saving up to get her master’s in social work and her commentary on the parties and people she covered was priceless. We would go to a bar after work and she would do a bit pretending to be Marlon Perkins on Wild Kingdom (if you remember that), holding her beer bottle like a microphone describing the ”herd of marriageable young women out on the dance floor” and shouting ”oh look, there’s Jim in the bushes having his way with one of the debs!”

She was the funniest person alive and her bits about the weddings she covered were legendary. There was a lot I did not tell her but the jig was up at my brother‘s (first) wedding.

She did finally quit and got her MSW.

I feel like I am reminded regularly how vapid so many people in "society" are. And I think it's because they feel like they don't have to try very hard to have a personality.

F Scott Fitzgerald addressed that very thing, Pal, in many of his stories.

This passage from his story Winter Dreams is very apropos to your comment @Lisaam:

”He knew the sort of men they were — the men who when he first went to college had entered from the great prep schools with graceful clothes and the deep tan of healthy summers. He had seen that, in one sense, he was better than these men. He was newer and stronger. Yet in acknowledging to himself that he wished his children to be like them he was admitting that he was but the rough, strong stuff from which they eternally sprang.”
