What will the weather be like in October?

I can readily recommend my favorite rain coat. If you're looking for a packable jacket this might not be for you. You could roll it and stuff it into a backpack and depending on your height this is mid-thigh length. I've mentioned it here before and I know a few other posters have one. It's the Eddie Bauer Womens-on-the-go trench. They have both insulated and non-insulated. I have the insulated version because the lining is removable. One feature that I like is that the insulated lining extends down the arm and buttons inside the cuff. And the hood is removeable.

This is the coat I took to Ireland in late October a few years ago and it was perfect. We had very blustery, near winter weather on the west coast yet in Dublin it was 10 degrees warmer and I left the insulated lining in my room. I'm not fond of the Eddie Bauer name embroidered on the sleeve but it wasn't a deal breaker. It's more noticeable on some colors - mine is navy. They also have a shorter, packable rain jacket.

I second the recommendation for Eddie Bauer women on the go trenchcoat. I have the one with the lining and it is warm enough to wear on the coldest of winter days at least in Pennsylvania. Without the lining, it is a perfect raincoat. I traveled all over eastern Europe in the fall with it and it was perfect. know MTN tried it on and thought she looked like a linebacker. I laughed because when I wore it, I felt like one of those college varsity athletes. In fact, I was walking down the street in New York and a young man was wearing a varsity swimming jacket that looked suspiciously like what I was wearing. I sort of gave him a nod as if to say yeah, athlete to athlete. Lol. (in real life, I don’t think it came across as creepy as it did just now here).

Speaking as a person with too many raincoats, the one I would recommend for a trip in cool, but not cold, weather is the Perfect Raincoat from J Crew.

It’s only available in a few colors right now but navy is one of them. I have it in yellow and plan to get it in red when that color is re-introduced.

Nice! I do remember mentions here about the Women on the Go coat. It looks appropriate for trail walking, too. Is Eddie Bauer online-only now?

Has anyone tried their rain pants?

I definitely want to be able to roll everything up in my pack, and be lightweight. (DH insists he doesn’t need waterproof rain pants. I might have to let him find out for himself.)

I don’t know what the weather will be in October, but when i was there before it was August and within any given day we needed everything from shorts or jeans and tees to fleeces and mittens and complete raincoverage. And yet, this summer has been quite warm and dry, with occasional rain.

I have Frogg Toggs rain pants and jacket that I wore on some very rainy hikes in Alaska. They kept me dry, and were not expensive. I did wear layers underneath.

I have a Patagonia rain jacket that I really like. It doesn't compress into a pocket but it will roll up for easy packing and is waterproof rather than water resistant. It kept me dry in the constant drizzle of Ketchikan, Alaska. Patagonia sizing is sometimes off, but their jackets usually fit me. I am 5'6" and a size 6. I bought a small and was able to layer underneath. I don't see my colorway which is black on top with gray on the bottom. Also, the fit is a bit longer on me than on the model.

I bought this jacket for our Norway trip and have been wearing it also in Canada for the past 2 weeks. It is roomy and fits my pear shape well. It took me forever to find something that fits well even with a sweatshirt or fleece layer underneath. Just wish they had more colors. Mine is dark gray.

I am only 5’ 2” so it fits longer on me, covering my bum. 😎
