Eliminating the 3rd color would make the ceiling and trims read as one plane thus more spacious.

IMO, you should paint the ceiling and walls the SAME color. I moved into a house that has beautiful crown molding, painted white, the same color as the ceiling. Even though the room has a 9 foot ceiling, it felt visually shorter than any other room due to the fact that the wall was a darker color. It looked like the ceiling started 8 inches lower, where the crown molding started. Painting the ceiling a different color "popped" the crown, which visually heightened the room.

In your case though, without crown molding that you need to highlight, you will have better results by painting the ceiling and walls the same color, visually uniting the space as one. And i wouldn't worry about the ceiling being too dark...ultimately, the ceiling always ends up looking a little lighter than the walls because of the way light intersects differently with the ceiling than the walls.

Plus, I personally think it looks very sophisticated. : )
