You need a picture and zone, nearest city, and sun/shade, deer or other pest, and any other specific issues, like clay soil. . As a general rule, I think a small flowering tree looks good in the middle of the front yard. I'd put some azaleas on either side of the steps to the front door. Search for landscape photos, collect them in an ideabook and decide what elements you like and implement them.

You need to remove a lot of that asphalt. I'd be very surprised if you need all that parking.

As always, you need to seek the help of someone ( a nursery, landscape designer or ? ) local. Even though you’ve mentioned your zone, there are wide variations, microclimates, exposures, etc. that can’t be addressed on here.

What a lot of driveway/parking lot you have! Is there a possibility of pulling some of that back away from the house?

What side are you calling the ”front?” THIS side?

The front is where the steps are, and yes we can pull back some gravel and place grass or grasses with mulch

It's hard to get an overall sense of the property from the photos. Is that the road that we see on the right? (See marked photo below.) Can you take a picture from farther back so we can get a sense for how the house relates to the road? Some indication of property lines would help too.

I ask because we think of the property as a whole, how the house should be approached from the road, where visitors will park, how they will get from their car to the door, etc. Landscape design is as much about how it works as how it looks.

If deer are a problem, Japanese maples are not a good choice. Focus on deer resistant plants, and be prepared to spray even them in the beginning because deer will check out anything new and you want their first experience to be a bad one.

Plan for trees to shade the house, especially with the sun beating down on that vast expanse of gravel. Large trees at appropriate distance, smaller understory trees closer. For shade from the hottest sun of the day, trees to W/SW. For morning shade, trees to E/SE.

Any chamce of you telling us where this is? Iowa? Massachusetts? New Mexico? Berlin?

It can make a big difference in how easily some plants are to grow.

I still don't have a good sense of the property. In the photo with the road at the bottom, the house looks like it is set square with a basically straight road. In the wide-view photos with the bit of road at the right side, the house looks like it's at about a 45-degree angle to a road that is curving away from the garage side of the house. I see a utility pole in one photo but can't tell whether the driveway enters only to the right of it (as you're facing the house) or could perhaps enter to its left. Maybe a rough sketch of the property, indicating road, house, and utility pole location, with whatever dimensions you can provide, would help? How far is the house from the road?

I need to start small and work towards more later. Today it seems bare, we have big property behind us.
