Kitchen Reno Updates

There has been a lot of waffling back and forth over the perimeter countertops. I realized if I used Corian on the perimeter counters and wood on the island I’d have no place to set dishes that come hot out of the oven except the range top, and if that was in use I’d always be scrambling for a trivet. So I went with the Dekton product instead, although in a solid color with no veins or speckles of any kind. It has a lifetime warranty against discoloring, staining, chips and cracks. The surface is in a matte (but not leathered) finish.

And since every new surface and color in the kitchen will be very dull (non-reflective) I am using polished nickel for the sink faucet, hot water dispenser faucet, soap dispenser, and garbage disposal air switch.

(for some reason the photo of the nickel faucet looks duller than IRL 🤷‍♀️)

The cabinet doors (vertical shapes) will all have polished nickel knobs while the drawer fronts (horizontal shapes) will have nickel bin pulls.

And those are all my choices made! The install should begin within the next 30 days, kitchen gods willing 😁

I hope you like the polished nickel. It does darken with age and use. If you want your hardware to continue to look pristine, don't use a live finish.

I am hoping it will tone down with use. I decided against chrome for that reason, because it was too bright — and stays bright.

KSWL, I would never put a hot pan directly from the oven onto any counter.

    Pretty!

I have what I think is chemistry lab counter on one side of my range here, and a Boos block on the other, and then a vintage drainboard sink. Other than the Boos, both are safe for hot pans, but I still don't do it! What do you have now, and do you really put hot pans directly on it?

Glad you could find a substitute for Corian; it is hard to find solid colors. I had to look up Dekton countertops; there is always something new in kitchens! LOL at this blurb that that was the first result: ultra-compact, high-performance surfaces made from a sophisticated blend of porcelain, quartz, and glass. (italics mine) I just hate those unsophisticated blends, don't you?

I like your choices and it’s fun seeing it all happen as you go along. :)

We’re going to be getting new counters (very small kitchen, no island, tile counters currently) and these types of threads are helpful. We had Silestone in our last house and loved it, but I want to consider other products.

Love the polished nickel - one of my favorites. I think I also that faucet style in a previous home - Delta Cassidy maybe? Very elegant. Excited to follow along with this update!

Love the choices. Can you please share where your getting them from? I'm in the market for drawers & pulls, and these would work well!

Cosentino is actually the subcontractor for installation. I asked the salesperson specifically about the warranty, as I also understood it to be 25 years, and she said ”lifetime.” We shall see what the actual installers have to say, lol. Twenty-five years will see me to 95, so I could live with that.

I have granite counters here and in our previous house and have always put hot pans from the oven down directly on them. Seriously, if you can’t put something hot on a rock, why have it next to the stove or oven? As I understand it the biggest hurdle with any porcelain or this particular iteration of it is in the installation. I’m happy for a vetted sub to come in for that.

Pudge, I just looked at oodles of pictures, found ones I liked, went to the mfg sites and then ordered the product on their Amazon store. I knew I wanted one of the brands with a lifetime warranty (Moen, Kohler, Delta also i think and a few others). The sink is a Krauss 16 gauge stainless steel undermount. The sink opening is 28” by 16” (actual measurements 30 x 18). I wanted a narrower sink than I could have got because the counters will only be an inch overhang instead of 2” or 1.75”. All electrical outlets will be up underneath the cabinets so the brick backsplash will be pristine.

adding, the faucets and soap dispenser are Moen Weymouth. The knobs and drawer pulls are from Pottery Barn. I ordered both types of hardware from three different mfgs in two sizes each (knobs in 1” and 1.5” and the bin pulls in 3” and 4”.) Liked the PB ones the best and like the 3” pull and 1.5” knob best together. Before I order 26 knobs and 18 pulls from PB though I am looking for that same product elsewhere for less. The knobs are like $15 each and the bin pulls $19 or $20 😵‍💫 If I can’t find them for less I’ll get them anyway bc they really feel nice! But, hoping to find them elsewhere!

I'm looking forward to seeing your kitchen. I hadn't heard of Dekton but that product looks fabulous to me. Someday I hope to do new kitchen countertops, new bathroom shower slabs and countertops and Dekton looks like a super cool option.

As a reminder, this is the kitchen mock up (a kitchen, not my kitchen) using all the elements I specified for my kitchen (thank you ChatGPT)

Senora Gray cabinets, walnut island top (and bar top for us), neutral beige perimeter counters, stainless appliances, brick backsplash.
