FedEx and Chewy

The last order of dog food was thrown on my front lawn on a very sunny day. My front door has a small covered porch and all deliveries are always placed near my front door.

I called Chewy and asked why my order was put in the middle of my ftont yard rather than on the porch.

They said they would leave a note for Fedex.

Fast forward tontoday, a very rainy day. My package was left in front of my garage! Luckily I found it before it got too wet.

I called Chewy and the rep was very sympathetic.. She now put a note on my actual account for Fedex to see.

She is sending me another bag of dog food, and as she put it, “ Not becaused you asked ( which Indid not), but we want to make things right. “ She also wants to see what happens when this box gets delivered!

I am flabbergasted. In what universe would a customer want a package delivered in the middle of a lawn or outside of a garage on a rainy day when there is an accessible covered porch?Very strange.

We live remotely with 2 Australian Shepherds and order food, toys, and Rx drugs from Chewy. They have been amazing.

Sounds like you should call FedEx directly and let them know. Chewy can't really control how a FedEx driver delivers.

The other day a fairly heavy RTA desk was delivered to my mom’s front door, a full flight of stairs up from the driveway. I’ve got a bad back and knees and wasn’t happy about having to carry it back down to my car. But I appreciated the effort. 🙂

Is your garage attached? A lot of people keep pet food in their garage. A detached garage would be less explainable. Lawn seems like a rushed or lazy driver.

I’ve got a second house where I’d like deliveries left under the covered stoop at the back of the driveway. I had standing instructions on Amazon for that address, which interestingly were only followed for a brief period. I removed it and will reserve that for when it really matters, in case it helps.

I’ve thought about leaving a supply of envelopes with cash in a wicker box that sits on the porch. And leave instructions ”please take one envelope from the box after delivering to the back porch.” With a Nest doorbell they’d know they’re on camera so it would be an interesting experiment!

On the whole though, I try not to put high expectations on the delivery folks. They’ve got to hustle to complete their routes, it’s tiring work, and I can’t expect them to best assess each delivery point as I wish they would.

Sephia, I think if I should have contacted FedEx, Chewy would have told me.

Food, yes I understand, but to purosely leave a box in the elements when a better alternative is two steps away?

I get t if my expectation was convoluted but the front door ?

I have one dog on prescription dog food so use Chewy more than I would have otherwise.

They do customer service right. So impressed with them. I am so impressed with them that I have started ordering more from them than I otherwise would.

    Funny how that works. 😄

    5/5, would definitely recommend.

Fed ex gets a 3 from me. I do have a fed ex account with explicit instructions, which is to leave deliveries on or under a bench beside my side door. If you are in my driveway you can't miss it. Fed ex usually leaves the box leaning up against my garage door, or otherwise in my path of travel into the garage, which saves them maybe 3 extra steps.

Funny, this topic came up as I'm waiting for a Chewy delivery of cat food, which was to arrive between 10-2. Close to 4 and it's not here yet. I have yet to get an email that it was delivered to someone else. I see that on FB every day with a pic of a package delivered to the wrong address.

“Food, yes I understand, but to purosely leave a box in the elements when a better alternative is two steps away?”

If that’s the scenario then I totally agree it’s confounding.

I get 2 orders every month from Chewy and it is always delivered on time and the drivers I have delivering are wonderful, they place the boxes by the man door of my garage inside the carport.

Amazon is a whole other story - boxes left in the rain, dropped anywhere around the front door, often on top of the plants, some lighter packages not placed between the doors or in the mailbox and they blow across the lawn on windy days.

My regular mail has not been delivered regularly since COVID. Before COVID I got mail daily, now I have nothing for 2 or 3 days and then get a motherload shoved in the box. I happen to be one of the only houses where the driver has to get out of the vehicle to deliver the mail, everyone else in the neighborhood has street side mailboxes.

The majority problem, of course, is delivery services. I've put package placement requests on orders several times, the instructions aren't followed in majority of instances. Well-more than half (70%?) of deliveries from any merchant, whether via FedEx, UPS, or USPS, have arrived with damage to the box/package across the past year. The merchandise (two-pack of HVAC filters) was unusable in one instance. I contacted the seller for reship, per FedEx instructions. The reship again had the box and *one* of the filters slightly damaged but usable. I advised the vendor accordingly so they have a record of it even though another reship wasn't necesssary. Two instances of Chewy deliveries had damaged boxes but the contents (bag of dry food) was OK. My sister, due to cats with chronic illnesses, has had a lot of Chewy orders, some instances of damaged merchandise, which they replaced without question and suggested she donate whatever portion of it is OK to a local animal shelter.

Packaging is also often subpar on Amazon orders. One instance had several items in a box with NO additional padding/stuffing such that the items (in their individual packaging) could/would freely bounce around. Nothing, surprisingly, was damaged.

I had a chat recently with the neighbor that I mentioned in a discussion a while back who sometimes has packages left outside his entrance security gate, left there for several days and occasionally subject to rain while they're away. He said that the drivers are supposed to have the gate code. Either some don't or they don't want to bother with it. He said go ahead and fetch such items to safety, and we have exchanged phone numbers. So there's that.

My Chewy order did not arrive today. It was supposed to arrive between 10 and 2 , but I don't think anyone else got it since I got no verification email that it was received. It's NOT Chewy; it's FedEx.

I have so much trouble with delivery drivers. I don't order from chewy, but other places use fed ex or UPS; Nordstrom uses Ontrac which is the WORST. I have a covered porch, but some drivers just leave my stuff on the steps next to the driveway that lead thru the gate to the porch. It's not far, there are 4 steps. I recently had hand surgery and couldn't lift anything for a month. I put a note on the steps asking to please put stuff on the porch and thanks. OnTrac left a box next to the note. FedEx left a box in front of my garage door that I couldn't lift and had to just kick it into the garage (it's a detached garage). Fed Ex delivered something through a side gate (the front gate is quite obvious) to the back yard, which is very private and I would be shocked to have someone show up there while I was dressing, so I put notes on the garage door and that gate saying please put packages on the front porch. Then I have to put a big note on the other side of the gate asking them to please latch it. More than one has left the gate open allowing deer to decimate my garden....the fence and gate are for the sole purpose of keeping deer out. I can never reach anyone at Fed Ex or anyone that is helpful. I even tried going to the local UPS store but they can't help.

Well.. Today my free ment is coming from Chewy. Let's see where they leave it.

People seem to buy everything online these days. We constantly have just regular people driving up and down the streets delivering packages out of their cars. It's crazy. Since I am home most of the time and know most of my neighbors, if I see something sitting out that could be in a better place on their porch, I will move it. I have one neighbor that when she receives something of value, she will text me and ask me to get it off her porch for her while she is at work. It's just a completely different world now.

My old house is confusing. The main street entrance would seem to be the drop off place, but we use the side door as our main and only entrance. We are on a corner. We have a picket fence surrounding the whole property with five gates. But today the FedEx guy picked the right one, the side entrance, but my husband said he parked in front and carried the 34 pounds of cat food to the side entrance and put them inside the picket fence gate. So good job.

I wonder how deliveries are going to go once delivery is more dronified. I would imagine that dropping packages will have at least to start, errors where they don't land in an auspicious spot.

Interesting point Lucille. I wonder if things will get better or worse. I mean, drones will follow instructions exactly, regardless if they have to fly 3 more feet, you know? But drones will follow instructions exactly. What if I move my bench? What if my neighbor is sitting on it? The possibilities are endless. 😄

What if my neighbor is sitting on it?

That's funny! But thought provoking, as people or pets or wildlife are apt to be in spots destined for delivery. To say nothing of cars backing out of garages as the drone is obeying the order to drop the package by the garage door.

FedEx drops my packages in front of my garage door that is 30feet from the street. Rain, sun, sleet, snow, anytime of the day or night. They left it at a neighbors house down the street once and one street over once. I have taken packages to different houses seversl times. It is not just FedEx, UPS , and the post office do it also. UPS is not quite as bad as the other two.

The only good thing about Nextdoor is the lost pets and the musical packages.

What if I'm gardening and 34 pounds of cat food lands on my head? I'm guessing though, they will have lighter packages.

Liliy, 5 pounds from 13 feet might feel like 34!

    > "Sephia, I think if I should have contacted FedEx, Chewy would have told me."

I disagree. Chewy does everything they can to make the customer happy. If the rep said "You need to call FedEx", you may be here complaining about her attitude. They don't want to push back on customers or turn them away.

Chewy doesn't control FedEx. I agree that your first call should have been to FedEx.

i have waged war with fedex for almost 30 years. i live so far out in the country, i should have my own zip code. there are 4 families on 20 acres, my house is at the end of a long private dead end lane as far away as you can be from the rest of the houses. my packges usually get delivered to one of the other houses and i have to go hunt them down. it's especially frustrating in the winter months.

i have delivery instructions to leave things either on my front deck or in my garage. i am the only house out here WITH a garage so it shouldn't be that hard. it's a little easier to find things now that fedex provides a photo of deliveries but still...

I had $97 in food cans from Chewy destroyed, presumably in shipping. Every can had small dents, several were large. I spent too much time reading up on metal can material science (😆) and finally decided 6 were unusable.

Contacted Chewy and told them that, asked if they would refund the 6 cans. The rep said that was such an unsatisfactory delivery experience she was refunding the whole order.

Every time Chewy comes up, people come out of the woodwork with how much their customer service impressed them. That is an impressive feat in today's business world.

Chewy is a massive online retailer. Their business model is dependent on good delivery. If everytime I make an online order it is destroyed in shipping, Chewy suffers bc I will search elsewhere.

The extra nice thing is Chewy is huge, and has a better chance of influencing Fed Ex than anyone of us do. Heck, they likely negotiate rates based on the feedback they get from customers, or they have a company charge back/credit or performance incentives built into their contract.

I agree. My experience with Fedex is that talking them is like talking to a wall.
