Relocated, new bed layout

We moved to a new home in late 2025 and are ready to think about our first large bed. It is going to be approximately kidney shaped and about 126 square feet. I am hoping to fit as many roses as possible, without compromising their health, accented with perennials. This is what I have generally had before.

I love antique roses but am thinking about a mix of them as well as a few hybrid teas. I am in zone 6b in New England. Please offer any advice about the quantity of roses as well as my current considerations (some of these I have grown before but in a different area of the US)

My 2nd bed in 2028 will probably have mainly David Austins.

*Paul Neyron

*Fuego de Amore

**Iceberg

*Double Delight (my Dad loved it)

*Chicago Peace

*Other in a Purple Tone?? Any of these:

Violet's Pride

Love Song

Blue Girl

Unless you are willing to spray aggressively with the organic controls or a little less aggressively using the conventional controls, for the dreaded black spot, and the less dreaded powdery and downy mildew, not to forget cercospora, your garden will look a hot mess growing those black spot magnets you listed.

Make your selections from ADR, A.R.T.S, and AGRS trialed/tested roses, and you will have a much easier time growing roses.

I do spray but I will check those out. I've had Paul Neyron, Chicago Peace and Double Delight in a more humid climate.

I have not had issues with Davis Aistin roses but I have rose beds with lots of spaces between bushes so air moves all the time through them and cuts dowm dramatically on fungus diseases and bugs

    Where do you garden, Patricia?

Violet's Pride is an excellent choice. Mine never gets any disease even with our cool nights and rain.

Would you call Violet's Pride lavender or lilac?

Violet's Pride takes a long pause between flushes, but the blooms last at least 3 weeks here.

What color would you call this? I'm terrible with purples/lavenders.

The top photo looks really pink and the bottom one a little more like lilac? It depends on the light and time of day?

I agree with Moses. Why spend time, money, and work spraying, if you don't have to? Recent research has identified many many roses which can live clean in almost any climate. Since you have moved, you could start over again and try some different ones. One way to get an idea about which roses actually LIKE the climate conditions in your new area is simply to go around your neighborhood looking for roses and/or rose gardens, find roses which are happy and healthy, and inquire if they need spraying or not. Oct is a great time to do that, as most re-blooming roses bloom then. Also see if there is a local Rose Society and ask them about roses which are healthy "no-spray" where you live.

Just a suggestion - I have over 150 roses all over my garden, and the only one I spray is a very old clone of 'Peace', which we inherited from my DH's ancestors, who planted it when it was new & exciting in the late 1940s. That plant eventually died, but I was able to grab a cutting of the part of it which was still alive and root it.

That is a good idea...I'll see if there is a rose association. There are not a lot of rose enthusiasts in our neighborhood. I do love the coloring of Chicago Peace. In the Fall when the nights are cool, the colors can knock your socks off.

Double Delight - lilac, it is, then. It's not pink in real life. Oh, so true about Chicago Peace!!! Incredible beauty to its blooms!! Mine was healthy, but at that time, all of my roses were healthy. Our weather has changed.

So I'm guessing that your weather is warmer but is it more humid?

We're getting more rain and cooler nights all summer. The two aren't a good combination. lol
