how about painting the walls F&B Matchstick, the ceiling White Tie and add fun colored pillows to the couch? And try google brick and limewash :-)

Pull your sofa out of the corner and find a piece of colorful art you love to hang on the wall behind it. That will key your color selections. I'd lower the TV above a longer credenza, not a TV stand.

I have been thinking a lot about painting my brick fireplace. I think that will brighten up my space a bit. Maybe an off white.

Off- white would be great for the fireplace and I recommend painting the walls the color of the carpet. Use pops of color in accents.

painting the fireplace is great. if you want a more modern look for it in addition to the paint, you could frame out that mantle a little and make it seem chunkier.

i would not paint the walls the color of the carpet. i think that would be too dark, even with the big sliding door.

i would do a warm taupe-grey, but a light one. it'll give a little color and warmth, but it won't make it cave-like.

I think you have too many focal points. Number one is the fireplace and number two is the tv. Even though its old school I would put the tv above the fire place. It's unfortunate that you have the large pit sofa but b/c it's new you could move it away from the wall and angle it toward the TV above the fire place. I'm big on space planning and I can almost image the space, but not 100%. Forgive me if there's not enough room to angle. I've never been a fan of painting brick b/c it looks like painted brick but in this case you may want to consider it. You may want tod extra on a specific paint like pearlized Ralph Lauren brand rich brown similar to the sofa color. Again I can't seethe layout but once the TV is off the wall you could float the sofa off the wall facing it towards the glass doors. Btw you should bring the draperies all the way to the ceiling to add height to the room. If you do the chocolate pearlized paint for the fireplace you may consider a warm white for the rest of the walls giving a contrast to keep the room light. Along with the browns and warm whites you may want to consider teal blues and warm ambers in wall art, pillows and other decorations.

Ps if you are willing to move the TV you may want to move the long side of the sofa with the back parallel to the wall that follows the stair case opposite the glass doors, but dont put it right on the wall, give a 2-3 ft space leaving the shorter side of the sofa parallel to the window but float it off the window so that it is not more than 10 ft or so from the TV. That is the comfort zone for viewing TV.

Hi there! You can also add lots of color by changing your drapes! :) I'd go with a warm beige or some sort of blue to match your accent throw pillows. Also that morroccan style mirror, I'd paint it black, gold, or maybe a red so that it doesn't dissappear into the wall.

A bright piece of art, bringing in colors from your pillows, in place of the black framed mirror. Walls definately need more color. Wait until you find a wall color before you change color of morroccan mirror. Possibly a different chair, depending on your art.

I'd replace that mirror to the left of the fireplace with two pieces of art stacked vertically. You can use the colors in the art to influence drapes and throw pillows. I love the difference that moving the couch has made!

I definitely would not go to a color on the window treatments., but you have made great strides in this room. Allow the sofa and the pillows to draw your attention, not the window treatments.

I think you are going the right direction on your fireplace if you opt for a mirror. However, the family pictures need to be put somewhere else. If the round mirror over your sofa is larger, I would use that one on your mantle instead. I do think "round" is a good thought.

Secondly, your hanging family pics over your sofa might look better in another room. I would use that space to add a large canvas of color. If you are on a budget, you can go to a store and buy a large piece of canvas and grab some paints and go to town on your own abstract using the colors you like. Since your sofa is so dark, I would really make the painting bright (but not primary colors). Then, you can choose your pillow colors, drapes and the rest.

Others may not agree, but I think you have too many mirrors going on. I would select the largest one for your fireplace and be done.

I love your lamp over the sofa. I think if you ask yourself, "is this contemporary like my lamp?" every time you purchase something for your room, it will help you. If the answer is "no", then leave it in the store. Good luck ;)

I decided to put quiet moments by Benjamin Moore in the family room. I am praying that it works. I like it. It's a soft gray blue. I genuinely love the color, I just am never sure in my choice until it's done.

I am still dreaming of doing something with my fireplace. I do not love the brick and really dislike the mantle.

In your first photos, my eye was drawn to the orange flowers. I believe that would be a great accent colour. Add some pattern and texture -- perhaps in your drapes, cushions, artwork, or throw. It's looking good!

I would go with a more taupe (gray/brown)wall color. Love your round mirror. Did you get it at pier 1? I wanted to look at it at our local store and they were out!

I think your curtains are fine and you just want to make sure they work with your new paint colors. There is a thread that is current where the homeowner whitewashed her brick and installed a new mantle. You may want to check it out because I think something similar could look great in your room as well. For the family photos I would prefer a gallery wall instead of having them spread out. Your floor lamp does have a cool contemporary vibe and janeinfo is right on the money with all her advice including reducing the number of mirrors.

Benjamin Moore Costwald would be a great wall color here with a white wash on the brick use Simply white because it has a yellow undertone rather than gray like many whites have. I would also check Home goods for colorful art - and I agree with the others that pulling the sofa out from the wall will help a lot. Put a floor lamp or console table behind it. Have fun

Add a large floor rug! Get one with some colors or maybe a fun pattern like chevorn or stripes. This will open up the room and make it brighter!

Boring ceiling! I like this graphic which we printed on a stretch ceiling for a condo kitchen. Also, here's a picture of a similar living room with a high gloss dark stretch ceiling. The gloss reflects enough light that you can break that old rule about white ceilings and make your ceiling more harmonious with the rest of the room.

You can always pick your artwork first then pick colors from it for accent color.

I agree with others about too many mirrors. Also the blue pillows are not the right shade/hue for your room. Easy to change.

How about something like this?

Put some color on your walls, for the love of all that is good in the world. Lol. Not a beige or an off white or a gray. There are plenty of those types of colors in the room already. Color on the walls is what can give a room the wow factor. A warm olive green would look great with all the warm browns and beiges, and the red of the brick. Or a lightish dusty blue, perhaps, could help to cool the room a bit. Colors can be neutral if they're subdued with hints of brown or gray in them. They don't have to be supersaturated or bright. In the Houzz pictures section do a search for olive green or neutral blue or pale yellow, or whatever other color comes to mind, look at the rooms that pop up, and see if anything tickles your fancy. Then pick a color, get a sample, and try it out. The first time a painted a room a color, I was a little scared at first, but I love it, and will probably never have white, off white, or beige walls again.
