A darker mocha color for the cabinets would provide an updated feel.

Dark grey could help pull it together. Modern look with the black countertop. Then can change floor etc at later date

A medium warm brown, maybe a chocolate finish?

What do you guys think of white or an antiqued ivory? We are not loving the idea of the darker cabinets with the black granite...

Personally, I think the tile is fighting with the cabinets, and the cabinets would look better with a different floor, and not nearly as yellow.

If you paint, grey would probably not look that good with the tile. A creamy or antique white would be safer.

That is such a big task to redo cabinets and get them to look professional and as nice as they are now. I would suggest changing the wall paint and bring some other color in there as an accent. Find an area rug for the floor. But I would take out the backsplash and put a nicer looking tile there.

White cabinets would be lovely I would suggest however changing the paint color to a soft grey so they will stand out .

I would keep the cabinets and go with a different floor, backsplash and paint. They all seem kind of "run of the mill". The cabinets could look just great with the right accompaniment.

I'm going to go opposite of the masses and say consider changing the granite counter and backsplash and leave the cabinets. I think they look great! To me it's the counter top and backsplash tile that look dated. You could probably do this for the same cost as having the cabinets painted and it would look much better. If you do, make sure you get a thick edge on the granite, at least two thichnesses of the slab, just one looks cheap. Great kitchen!

Painting the cabinets is the most inexpensive change you can do in this kitchen. Then paint the walls.

My vote, off white cabinets,change the flooring and backsplash to reflect neutral background and add touches of color to taste, leaving ability to change maybe down the road if you feel like different color scheme.

I agree grey cabinets would look great, and there are economical solutions to replacing the backsplash. Below is pressed tin I opted for in our kitchen(www.tinman.com). Average cost psf is just over two dollars. Good luck!

Another vote for keeping the cabinets and spending her money on a new backsplash and flooring and possibly light-colored quartz countertops instead of black granite

Ok so the plan is to paint the cabinets white and the walls a soft grey as suggested by some of you. The floor tile is getting ripped out and new porceliain tile in the "wood" look is getting installed. The floor tile was a last minute decision but I think it will do a lot to update the space! thanks for all your suggestions everyone! - We will post pics when it gets done next week!

Good Afternoon All - Just wanted to provide some updated pictures of the space. She chose a Shaw wood look ceramic tile and Grey Owl paint from Benjamin Moore. Cabinets were painted a soft white. The back splash is the same for now but will eventually be updated. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I would suggest knobs or pulls if she can so the painted cabinets get less wear.
