What colour area rug

I am looking to replace this area rug. Any suggestions on colour, size?

First of all, are you in love with those pillows (way too many of them BTW!) because you can basically choose a rug with any color you like and repeat that in the pillows and a throw. You have neutral walls and sofa, so get some color going on! Best of luck!

A Mahogany rug, with new solid velvet/silk red pillows, with bronze colored accent pillows. Adding a nice art piece that has Blue, Brown, and Red will help make the space cohesive.

Yes I am in love with pillows lol

I love this Orla Keily rug. But it would be a shame to cover it up with that heavy coffee table. Also if you were to go with this, you could recover some of your existing cushions (like the 2nd one from the right) with some other cushion covers to bring in some other others and add vibrancy with prints similar to the ones on this pic to pick up the darker colours in the room (the black/dark wood).

I would say burgundy as well. Where did you get the coffee table?

We got the coffee table from Leons last year.

    Thanks for all your suggestions!

Sange13 - Is that the coffee table with the 4 seats that pull out from underneath. I have the same one. The link to the rug I sent is on sale now for 100.00 at the brick. I have the same one as well.

Here are a few suggestions to pull in the colors and transitional style of the pillows and sofa, while providing a practical background for the room ( i think I see a child/pet gate in the foreground?)

Hi, here are some other alternatives that can add punch and allow you to pull in some other colors. I found these on overstock.com Good Luck!

I, too, would go with burgundy accents. Some suggestions would be a large burgundy rug with just a hint of a pattern. Then, change out some of the leaf pillows (keeping only 2 or 3) and use block print with burgundy and tan, subtle prints, etc and a couple plain burgundy. When you cover your pillows, do a couple with the tan back and burgundy front so you can switch them around according to your mood. Then, tie it all together with a large painting above the sofa. Just a few ideas. A couple of nice burgundy glass or metal art pieces on the coffee table would help tie it together.

Our advise would be to get a larger area rug to span under all the furniture. This will actually make your space feel larger. Also, deeper and richer color.
Do not buy a red rug! Get rid of the pillows, buy a few to modernize the space. Maybe a pretty blue then add a cool geometric rug either in the same color as the pillow or do monochromatic like black and white striped. I happen to like your coffee table, yeah it's a little big but I think it works. Get something visually interested to set on top.

Color wise you could go either way but the larger rug is a must.
I'm thinking burnt orange or olive green here are a couple color swatches. I wouldn't necessarily go for these designs but definitely the color & subtleness. Your pillows already have a lot of design so you don't really want a "busy" rug.

We actually like the burt orange with the geometric design.
Thanks! I thought I saw a little bit of burnt orange on one of the pillows & thought I would bring out that color since it's such a beautiful color that went well with the space.

I love the suggestions from "rugs done right", especially the leaf pattern and I would play up the "burnt orange color. I think a similar size as you have now would work

I think Glacier is right, that coffee table is very large and dark for your furniture. How about lighting it up by dry brushing on a beige paint?

Looking at it closer, it seems to have cubes under it that you pull out for sitting. May be a lot easier to move that elsewhere (or sell at a consignment store), and find a new one.

I think the oversized dark coffee table is the problem not the rug>>>>>>>>>>>>>
  • 12 years ago
I'd do a larger rug to anchor your furniture group. Use a subtle/simple geometric design that won't distract from the pillows you love, and then do some sort of artistic arrangement on your coffee table in the same colors as your pillows. (Your pillows would stand out more if you only used a few of the prints and added a few plane pillows to complement the print. A large painting hung 6 inches above your sofa would look good, too. Perhaps a very simple beach or wooded scene? This rug might work well: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Hand-tufted-Mandara-Wool-Rug-79-x-106/6431103/product.html

pcmom1, now you tell us! Do you think vodka would be better?

Yes, a lighter coffee table and fewer pillows?

Poster, try pulling the cubes away from under the coffee table and post us a new picture.

This isn't quite the right style room, but gives an idea of light furniture with a dark coffee table:

Burgundy red would look beautiful, but I also like the idea of a white shag carpet.
All I have to say is stay away from red, maroon, or burgundy as far as the carpet goes. There's enough of that color in the pillows. It's too "easy" of a color to go with as far as choosing the color for your new carpet. It'll look too staged & boring. I really do think burnt orange or olive green is the way to go! :)

I don't think your table is too large either. How about one of these playfully sumptuous shags? They're hand woven from a blend of New Zealand wool and polyester, and have thick plush pile and come in several colors. Your pillows will look great with it and so will the damask on the bench. Just don't go too dark. Cozy room with the pretty floors and fireplace.

Hey, let skin show! area rug is for old folks!
I think Maguire nailed it. After you posted the other view of the room, the coffee table seems quite appropriate. Maybe scootch it away from the sofa a little. I think with a large enough rug you'd have plenty of room especially if you tuck the rug under the furniture a little. Your pillows will really look great together with the *heather* look of the shag rug.

Hope I didn't offend. Just picked up a thought put out there: keep existing rug and change table. I do think the table will work with a larger shag rug.

I still would like to see a picture without the ottomans under the table. It would show off the interesting wood design in the table.
You didn't offend me at all.
    I love all the suggestions.
    Thank you :)

How about a picture with no coffee table just for kicks and giggles////////////
  • 12 years ago
Why not shange the pillows to a brighter colours, the colour of midtable, smallerin size, and get a new brıght carpet, bigger in size, you'll sure enlighten and make it look much cosier..Good Luck
  • 12 years ago
I really do not want to change the pillows. I would rather put that money to a nice good quality rug. I like the pillows, but appreciate suggestion.
I like the pillows too! The rug is the only thing the room needs and I would go for a solid rug in a chocolate color or one of the other colors on your pillows. I've seen some cool rugs at Home goods and Peir 1.
