I am not a big fan of rugs! Although some are really pretty. I have mostly hardwood floors. I recently purchased my first rug for this house that we built seven years ago, with the help of Houzzers. I like it because it is small enough that I can take it up when I run my Scooba.

I love the timeless quality of oriental rugs. This is my living room. The rug is over 30 years old. And still looks new.

We moved last year and found out that all of our rugs were too busy for the new teak hardwood floor. Now we have a high pile rug from Ikea.

Midmodfan- your new floors are just gorgeous, like works of art on the floor. I can see why you wouldn't want competing rugs.

This one I loved. The colors, the pattern works great with our stuff. But it was cheap and wore out quickly. Note to buy on that is pile instead. The dog basically ruined the loop design. And it was really too small. But for $199 what can you expect!

Wool, wool and wool. Over many years and several mistakes I have learned that 100% wool is the best thing, at least for me and my family. They are easy to clean, last practically forever, and come in huge variety of patterns and styles. Here is a photo of one I just ordered (9x13), which will go in my living room. The single drawback that I am aware of is when storing you must be very careful to ensure that the moths cannot get to the wood.

I have rugs from Turkmenistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kurdistan and Iraq. I absolutely love each of them. I have even layered them in the past on top of wall to wall carpet.

I do not have a rug but would like one for my living room. My couch has a pattern
so I feel the rug should be plain, but can't find one I like. Does it need to be plain?

I inherited true mid-century furniture (sofa and love seat) from my mother, so I paired them with a fun rug and table.

Carpets throughout my house from all over the world. But none are the super expensive Persian variety.... unfortunately. Most I purchased in Hong Kong and middle eastern countries. Although I have many more than pictured, my sized down new home has no place to put them. The red medallion carpet is a Tibetan which I bought in Nepal.
As you can see, they run all the way from the front door to the back door.

I have also put one in my antique chinese bed which softens it a bit.

I picked some Qom rugs last time I was in Bahrain. They are far too beautiful to be on the ground with two young kids running around but I wanted them displayed so I use them as wall hangings.

rebecca07102005 you room seems pretty crowded, so I would vote, no, you do not need a rug. If you want one for more comfort, yes I would go with a plain but bright color. I see a bit of a rosy red, the rug would bring that out more and make it pop!

Thirteen years ago we had just completed a remodel of a 1930's Bungalow and were searching for a rug to put under the dining room table. We were out one day and saw a rug sale going on in a store parking lot. I was drawn to this particular carpet because of the greens and mauve in it and it was vintage. I don't know the exact age, but still love the rug and it now resides in our next house in the living room.

I thought that I would present a contrary view and show a rya rug. I bought it on ebay--came from Denmark--after our original from 1970 showed too much wear. I should add that it is much fluffier than it appears in the photo.

Since I'm allergic to dustmites - definitely no carpets or rugs for me. Sorry, but I consider all carpets and rugs unhygienic... expecially under a dining table.
And I would have to clean twice... first the rug and then underneath. ;-)

We love the look and feel of area rugs and have had many, but thanks to our beloved pooch (who is a peeing bandit), rugs had become disposable items in our house b/c we got tired of renting carpet cleaning machines all the time. Ugh!

We missed having a rug and decided to try a jute/sisal area rug, and guess what....she doesn't wee wee on it! It seems she doesn't like it, and that's wonderful, b/c it's our favorite rug ever!

I LOVE area rugs - all styles! I prefer hardwood or stone flooring and use area rugs to ground conversation areas as well as bedside to provide a soft landing underfoot. In the early 80's, my Mom and I carried armloads of silk rugs from mainland China.

@ kroze - because I used to have one... much better without! ;-) And the question was: Do you have rugs in your house... I simply answered that question!

I have 3 small dogs so twice a year I get new area rugs from Home Goods, they're affordable. In summer it's sisal or similar. In winter it's wool or an inexpensive oriental.

We love our Persian kashan and hope to use it in a much more contemporary setting in our new home. We are hoping it won't look too formal, but we think the ivories and taupes and varied blues will work with our furniture selections. We have 6 oriental rugs that can be seen from our current front door and they work together perfectly.

I absolutely love rugs except the ones made of viscose. Our decorator talked us in to one that is a beautiful color and feels wonderful. But, if you even spill water on it, it turns brown. It is in a greatroom--the room we do everything in.

We are retirees living on a fixed income so our home is not as fancy as many. But after being divorce and starting over at age 45, it is warm, light filled and clean and I am grateful to have it. We now live on a sand plain, live an outdoor lifestyle and have large dogs so our area rugs, (as well as our hard flooring beneath the rugs) like much else in our informal, country based home has been selected with that in mind. We use area rug one under our dining rom table, and area rug two in our living room to denote a separate living area. We also have a few runners to protect the walkway area from heavy wear of dog nails and to provide traction for a older dog with arthritis that fears "slippery floors." I selected a patterned rug to hide hair and lint as choose colors of brown, forest green, cream, rust for the same reasons. My philosophy is why choose something that is going to cause you a lot of extra work, frustration and grief down the road? I'm way to practical and way to busy!

I love my purple octopus rug! Working on the curtains now (silver w/plum accents) and having so much fun accessorizing!!

The rug is the latest addition to our living room. It does a great job of pulling all the colors in the room together and it makes me happy every time I look at it.

As the manager of a fine rug store I have a little bit of everything. Sisal in the kitchen, mountain grass in the family room, Tibetan with silk, Persian gabbeh, 20's heriz, machine woven karastan, and indoor outdoor from Dash and Albert. I try everything so I can better help my clients choose the perfect rug no matter their budget. If you are purchasing a rug for the first time, always think about where you would put it next. If you can imagine it in more than one space you have found the perfect rug! Our Heriz has been in our living room, dining room and has now made it to the guest room.

My rugs have made the "rounds" throughout the house as we have moved over the years. Can't imagine buying anything that won't "travel" abut the house!

Cotton Rugs
I desperately seek a woven cotton area rug (8x10') (for easy laundering.) Does anyone know of a good source?

If you wish to launder a rug, I think you will have to buy a gighugic washer to accommodate one that is 8x10!!

overall persian land has unique motifs of rugs and carpets from thousands of years ago, most of provinces and cities have their own design which is weaved by colored wool or cotton or kork wool or silk, such as Tabriz, Kashan, Qom, Naeen, Isfahan, Mashad, Lorestan, kordestan, Mazandaran, Gorgan and etc...in persian ancient culture rug or carpet means nature, colors, seasons, trees, animals, birds, flowers and plants, human's life and spiritual... and LOVE.

Being from the mid east, we had access to some of the most beautiful rugs. We left everything else behind to come here in the 90's, but my mother insisted on not leaving her 2 Bidjar rugs from northwest Persia, and have them both in my home today. Will never part with them or store them. Also have many of the old prayer rugs, and love the contemporary rugs as well.

Thomas, I too have collected several prayer and tribal carpets in my middle east travels. This particular carpet was unique to me. I bought it in Afghanistan many years ago and was told that it had once been on the tent floor of a tribal chief. I certainly didn't take those words to the bank but did find them interesting and plausible. I just loved the very unusual pattern and beautiful color. It has always been one of my favorites from my collection.

Hi i have a roughly 220inch by 140inch rug in my home. I not very familiar with rugs and would like to know what type of rug it is, what material(if possible with images) and possibly the value of something this large. i purchased it with my home and would like to know what i have. it is in very good shape, and super thick and VERY heavy . any and all help is appreciated
