Hello there! It looks like you could scoot your sectional about 3'- 4' closer to,that kitchen doorway and still have clearance there (I hope). This would bring the sectional and FP into a nice, cozy conversation area. At the moment the FP looks a little lonely sitting there all by himself.

Also, if you hang the pic lower (bottom should be about 6" or so from top of sofa, it will connect better to the sectional. You would have to move it over when you move the sectional anyway.

You could use the small side table more in front of the sectional. Right now it looks a little dwarfed by the sectional. Also, if you remove it from the side, you will definitely have room to move that sectional over.

It looks like a pretty cozy room, though. Can't get a good enough look at the area behind the sectional, but with the 24' length, you are right to create two different zones. If you don't have a sofa table behind the sectional yet, you could put one there so the other area looks more attractive.

I see now that the back of the sectional is curved, so a sofa table wouldn't work. I should mention that you may have to move your rug further under the sectional if you end up having to slide it closer to the FP in order to keep things lined up.

Thanks so much Karemore55. The couch is straight - it just looks curved because I used the "panorama" feature on my IPhone. I did try my sofa table behind the sectional (it's now behind one of the love seats at the window end of the room). I am going to try to shift everything as you suggest and see if it feels more balanced. Thank you again for your input!!

Hmmmmm.......wondering if the sectional could work in the back part of the room......turned the opposite of what it is now, so one back is on the wall and the other in front of the window. Not sure about covering the window, but wanted to throw this out there. One of the nice big plants in the corner there. Could the art work switch so the horse stays with the sectional?

Sofa table under the art work with the couch in front and the chair by the fireplace.....or is this just lining everything up around the room. Trying to figure out the couch and chair if the sectional would work in the back part of the room.

Could the couch have the back to the entry and be right about where the edge of the rug is now, facing the big window and the sectional? The fireplace would be at the side/back of it???? Do you use this fireplace? Do you want it to stay a focal point?

Abbyjean, Never thought of that. Maybe a couple more pics of area by window so we can see what furniture you have over there. It almost looks like a love seat and an armchair?

One way that I have seen this done is to have the sofa (going to assume abbyjean is right and that it's not a love seat) and the sectional back to back with the sofa table in between them. This way, you would have a view straight out the big bay window into your back yard. And the arm chair could be angled toward the sofa so that it has a more conversational feel to it.

Abbyjean, it's bothering me now that I know you're a school teacher lol - whenever I know I made a grammatical error (like starting a sentence with "and"), I feel like you're going to dock a mark!

I should clarify that this would be with the sectional still in the front part of the room.

That red pen disappears at 4:00 and might I say.....like these periods.....no rules at all when you are on chat boards like this.

Another thought...what if the sectional were to just slide right down in front of the window as is and the couch slide down more in front of the doorway to the other room toward the fireplace. Chair over where the art is. Fill in with plants and tables and lamps.

I've tried to think of a way to move the sectional down to the window end and use the love seats near the fireplace, but I always get stuck by the odd angle of the fireplace. I'm willing to shove things around though - just for fun! (and fortunately, my husband is willing to shove as well!) Thanks again for all your input!

Hamima, Actually what's bothering me more than the corner FP is the way you can see straight through to the front door from where you're sitting - that must be disconcerting at times!

Not sure if I can come up with other options, but sometimes if I sketch things out I can see it all better. And abbyjean is genius at these things! Anyway, what are the dimensions of your sectional - I'm guessing 8' each side, maybe 9'? Also, how do you tend to use this space, and could any of the furniture leave - maybe one of the love seats, for example?

Karemore55...I'm at the office right now but I believe the sectional is 8' each side. And I'm glad you brought up the "straight shot" to the foyer. I think I just realized that's one of my biggest complaints about the room! I'm open to removing one of the love seats. Actually, I'd prefer to replace both love seats with some comfy chairs but that's not in the budget right now. I thought about putting the sectional with it's back to the entry, which would help "separate" it from the foyer, but I was worried about visually cutting the room off. This room is mostly used when we entertain, (or if my husband wants a quick nap!) We don't use the fireplace much but it's not going anywhere so I have to deal with it. ;)

Hamima, OK, well this might work - big emphasis on might. If you move your sectional to the more private end of the room and orient it to face that side window (hopefully you have a great view out there), and keep it pulled out from the walls by about two feet, I think you could have a nice cozy LR that feels quite a bit more private than what you have now. Your rug obviously would move to this area, and I would orient the rug so that the longer part runs parallel with the back wall (hope that makes sense!).

So the front half becomes more of a "greeting area" with one love seat angled toward the FP with lots of clearance to get to and from the DR. I placed an ottoman in front of it so that it looks more welcoming, like something you might actually snuggle into and sit in front of the fire.

I would put your sofa table right about where you had the sectional, and keep that beautiful horse pic there - it will really anchor that whole area. If you have one or two large plants, you could place them behind the love seat. A floor lamp would make it for functional too, as well as make it feel "complete". Alternatively, instead of plants you could place a screen-type room divider. I would still do the lamp though.

If you place a screen or a large tree behind the couch, near the wall, it will give a more intimate feel to the area and separate the two zones. I love up-lights under trees to give a nice ambience at night.
