Art or mirror?

I am redecorating our new coastal home and having a dilemma deciding on whether to hang a mirror or artwork over the sideboard in the dining room. We have an open concept plan, and live near both the water and the woods. Ideally, my goal is to have a coastal and natural feel with a bit of bling. (I don't want it to be kitschy coastal or beachy). Our main focal point is the ocean view, and we do not have a fireplace, so this sideboard is our secondary focal point. Walls are soft grey, and the dining suite will be painted in a dark charcoal with a dark wax. Suggestions are welcome!

In my opinion it will be better with a painting to bring some mood, some colors in the space. Lovely decor on the sideboard by the way...

Thanks - I do plan to add some colour with draperies and upholstery on the chairs, and was thinking of perhaps a palm in the corner..

I would go with a beautiful piece of art ... something that mimics your oceanview

Maybe commission an art piece from someone local --to capture your beautiful area?

I suggest one large landscape print- something eye catching, maybe elegant. The buffet will be nice to change- some tall slim lamps would be a good look on each side or possibly wall lamps with a beautiful metal framed mirror. Have fun with the vignettes.

Have a mirror if it will reflect something beautiful or bounce light from a window opposite. If not , art is probably a better choice

If the ocean view is opposite that wall, you can repeat it with a mirror. Otherwise, art will add more interest and mood to your space.

Art work on the wall. I would go with maybe an abstract painting. Why ? Because if you like/love entertaining then an abstract is a conversation piece because they are so prone to different interperations

If people look strangely at you when you go out then mirrors are good .

I say find some great art piece...you have beautiful accessories there with lots of reflective value, so art with texture instead would be good to warm up the visual.

Thanks everyone. I do want to warm up the space and add a bit of color. The view is adjacent to the wall (on the left side), so a mirror would reflect a bit of it, but mostly reflect the seating area (this is one big great room). The stairs (entry) come up opposite the buffet wall, so whatever is over the buffet will be the first thing one sees when coming into the space.

needs color... I get so tired of designers & their white couches, white walls, white trim.... in nature the pure white animal gets killed first.

We definitely don't have a white couch! My husband is a mechanic, lol..... Our sofa is charcoal, I have a dark leather chair, and some of the other pieces are reclaimed wood. I like an earthy, natural feel - that's why I am somewhat bothered by the sterile look of the buffet wall (although adding draperies, etc. will help). :)

LOL I have a hubby like that... I have leather couch .... try a collection of framed mirrors to get the color in one room over to that room

Art! Something you love--as a muse for your room. I like anne dees idea using scones for balance. Furnishings, accessories, accents, wall colors in same color tones will help 'marry' the rooms together---You can do that with art also--or it can stand on it's own. When choosing Art, however, see that is is available to take on approval, to make sure it's all you want it to be in the space and the lighting.
