It is certainly possible, but you might want to think carefully about having the two different black finishes right next to one another.

I agree with Here Design and Architecture.......there are some wonderful plastic laminate choices out there that would look great with the newly painted black base.

Bring home some samples and see how they look with the rest of your kitchen. Don't be afraid to bring home some interesting patterns and colors. I have no idea what your colors are, but some contrasting colors like a mustard yellow or a red or teal would look great with a black base.

A more serious look might be a copperish metalic look or even a stone look.......Have fun with it........

I recently saw laminate formica counter called petrified wood and it looked awesome. Oh...is your current counter butcher block look wood? Anyway, I think you need some contrast so would not recommend black on black cabinet/counter. Can you show a photo?
