I would reposition the piano and then have a rug under it, to fit the space. Also, dress the window.

I wouldn't put a rug under the piano. There is a wonderful glow that a piano can have against hardwood. I agree with the window panels.

If you're looking to warm up the room, put some pictures on the wall, put a plant in the corner, and bring in colored chairs (like autumn red) with a side table between the chairs.. which may have flowers, a candle, and a book for decoration on the table. If you have room, maybe put a sort bookcase along a wall with books (obviously) and some pictures of the family

Thanks for the suggestions. All of our warmth is still in storage. :) We just moved in. We had carpet before so rugs and rug rules are new to me. From a pianists perspective the 1/4 inch of height the rug could give to half of the bench would drive me crazy. Do I use the rug under part of the piano and under the seating? Or just the seating area and to the piano legs but not under? I really like rules!

Are you concerned about having the piano this close to the window? Won't the temp changes play havoc with your sounding board?

The piano just doesn't look attractive with its 'rear-end' facing out! Turn it to an angle to show the beautiful keyboard! The glare from the window would bother me too.

This is where the movers put it. :/. We're stuck until I get some guys to lift it so we can move the coasters. They dropped it, too! Ugh. But it has to be in this room. It's not a concert hall...just a place to practice.

I think a hide rug would look nice under the piano and they fit into any decor.

An overdyed rug will be best for this floor.

Even if this piano is just for practice, reposition this beautiful instrument so when the top is up (like in your photo) the open side faces into the room . The music (sound) goes in to the room, not out the window or into a wall. Place it at least 12-14 inches from the window and out of direct sunlight ( I don't know the direction your window faces) a nice hide or flokati rug would be great. Keep the bench as a rug free area. Be sure to put felt pads on bench legs so you won't scratch that lovely floor.

I am also in the process of arranging my living room and baby grand piano. I measured the room and made a scale model of the piano, and used the graph paper to arrange in miniature. This is what I came up with and think it would work for you too. If you place the 2-legged side of your piano parallel to your beautiful window shades (as I have with my banister), you will have a beautiful arrangement to look at, and more importantly, a beautiful perspective while you are practicing piano. My house is mid-century modern, but you get the idea. I am going for a large 9x12 rug to fill the space, and where one piano leg will be on the floor, I will place it in a standard black piano cup. Forgot to mention a tip from my piano tuner: to move a piano within a room, you need 2 people, get 3 rags or towels folded to about 1-inch. Sit on the piano bench and use your leg lift to raise one leg at a time second person places the towel underneath. For the third leg, stand beside and with bent legs lift up and place towel. 2 people can then slide the piano to new spot or swivel to new direction. Here is my before position:

It's a better piano view from there. I'm been planning on moving it so that you can see the keys from the entry hall and I could look out the window while playing. I think a rug will help with sound. Draperies would, too, but we just bought shutters so it will be a while. :)

I think a sisal rug that fills the space would look nice, then maybe a small area rug to define your sitting area.

A zebra skin rug placed at an angle will have dramatic effect.

Rugs change the room's and the piano's acoustics, so if you're used to carpet you'll probably appreciate a rug under the piano.

If your piano has a very bright sound, a carpet can definitely help!

I have the same problem, except my grand is sitting on ceramic tile.

I also think a zebra hide rug would look spectacular under the piano. I, myself, am looking to purchase a baby grand soon. I am definitely planning on putting a zebra rug under it. We have hardwood floors and I think the zebra rug makes a great statement under a piano.

If your piano is played more than just as a hobby, let the room's acoustics by your guide. As far as adding a rug. I believe that all legs on the rug is a more traditional look. For a little more "edge," place a rug under one of the legs and the body. Pay careful attention to have all bench legs ON or OFF.
