Help designing basement!

I recently ordered tile and am in the midst of painting my basement but I'm not sure how to decorate it. I'm waiting for the tile to get in but in the meanwhile I want to start looking for furniture and lighting fixtures or other items that I can use to have a nice basement area. I want it to be used for entertaining.

It all really depends on the style that you want in the casing as there is lots of styles and with the different styles comes different casing sizes. is there anything that is standing out to you in terms of style? I have attached an image with a few different styles as they are quite popular

You can adapt these to LED lights and save lots of $$$. ( after you spend a little).

I like those silver canned lights. Are they motorized? It seems like they're able to be angled.

That's the light there they aren't motorised but they can be angled by simply moving them with your hand.

Thanks. Do you guys have any that are motorized?

Add heating mat under the tile for comfort
  • 12 years ago
@mbrabr I was thinking about that. I was debating that or mounting a fireplace on the wall. Do you think I should do both or one or the other?
Both, we have done 2 basements 1 with & 1 without, more time is spent in the heated floor basement.

@meoter you guys don't accept paypal?

Can u knock out a wall and put a recessed bar in? We have an area quite similar to yours which we currently doing up
  • 12 years ago
@dbyrne4 I love it! That's exactly what I want but didn't have the vision for. I want to do it in this section but do u think a wall would actually have to be knocked out?that section is already pushed back because my laundry room sits in front of it. I can take another pic so you can get a better understanding if need be.

We knocked the wall out to keep the bar flush with the room and keep space to a maximum. There was a kitchenette there previously so all the plumbing and water was already there. We'll finish off with floor tiles which look like timber.

@brrhim Sorry for the delay yes we do accept paypal payments if you click checkout at the top right and then click PayPal option looks like the image below

@dbyrne4 thanks for sharing. I'd love to see the finished product.

It's probably not what you're after, but your red wall remained me of this pix and I thought of sharing.
Also, the easiest way to do a bar is - buy a modern console table, two bar stools and place some shelves for bottles and glasses - something like photo 2 (above that recessed wall of yours would be ideal, without having to modify the structure).

We also have heated floors throughout our house; honestly, the warmth feels great under your feet, especially on tiles- I walk around barefooted all day!

Where are TV connections, so we can consider your furniture placement?

@dbyrne4 looks very nice! I love ur bar
@decoenthusiaste the tv is going on the red wall. I have to get another outlet installed in the middle of the wall so it's easier to hang the tv without seeing the wires.
At dbyrne4- did u just lay flooring right on the concrete. What brand of flooring did you go with? We r just in the middle of owing our basement too:)

How many regular TV watchers will you entertain at once? Are you thinking about anything like a pool table, foos ball, snack/game table?
I was thinking maybe like a pub type of table in that section by the windows or an air hockey table or something so i'm going to have the tv on a full motion swivel so that you can see it from any section you're in. As far as how many regular tv watchers probably 3 so i'm thinking a small couch with a chaise on the end and maybe one chair. I'm not sure about the chair I don't know if it will make the room look unbalanced.
I'd advise a sofa and two chairs for more flexibility, especially if the chairs are swivel ones. If you want a chaise the bi-sectional ones allow you to slide the chaise part and its cushion from one side to the other so you can put it in the best spot and not be limited by a single right or left chaise.

those are the exact type of sectionals that I have been looking at. In the first picture you see how they have a chair there, I was thinking something of that nature to kind of balance out that side and make it section off that room to create it's own little section and maybe put like a small side table by it
  • 12 years ago
    That should work well!
What type of flooring did you go with? It looks very nice!! Is it a ceramic tile? Did you put an underlay of some kind first? Is it heated too?
Tiles half done. Looks better than we thought it would! Bar in too
  • 12 years ago
Ceramic tile straight onto concrete. From Beaumont tiles if your in aust
  • 12 years ago
@Cher it's a porcelain tile and yes certain parts are heated. I have a built in heater down there so I didn't heat many parts and I'm also adding a fire place which will also add warmth.
My contractor used thinset underneath it's not placed directly on the concrete
  • 12 years ago
Both basements are gorgeous! I would love to see pics when you both finish them off! You're giving me lots of new ideas:)
