Kitchen paint color

We bought this house over a year ago. I've given the kitchen paint color time to grow on me. People love it or hate it, I think I hate it. The microwave's death has pushed me into repainting/updating. The fridge is stainless, so will the microwave, and later then oven and dishwasher. The island bead board and brown paint could stay or go. I like the cabinet color. I think the tile backsplash could work given the right paint color but I don't want to go too beige and washout the cabinets and accentuate the darkest brown or minty green. Help me figure out a paint color... or should I start ripping off the backsplash?

Hi Libby, Consider painting the island either white or creme. I see the stove and dishwasher are in the white family so in the meantime until they get replaced, stay close to their color of "white". When you switch them to stainless it should still look nice. It's hard to see the actual back splash but again Ben Moore has some nice soft greens. You should get a couple of sample swatches from your local store. Soft Fern, Hint of Mint, Healing Aloe, Teal Light. These are going to seem very "drab" in comparison to the green you have going on. But they are a more subtle and sophisticated version of green. Regarding the back splash removal, if you like it, keep it. When you're ready to do new cabinets, or even new counter tops - then update the back splash. Good luck! Vicki

I think taking out the backsplash would be the best idea. Trying to decorate around that will be the problem. Once the backsplash is gone and the appliances all match in stainless the rest will be easy, as you will have so many options;)

Why didn't the backsplash extend up to the cabinets??? Bad plan. The paint is fine, it's the BS that's causing the issue. I'd remove the BS and paint the whole kitchen in what ever color you like but use enamel paint. It's easy to clean and will tie the whole kitchen together. Oh no, now I also see that you have a 4" backsplash out of your counter material along with the shortened version of your tile backsplash. This drives Margo craZY.

I think having BS in the kitchen would drive anyone crazy ;D

Perhaps a softer green wold still give you the feeling you were originally looking for? SW hearts of palm :)

The glass tile was existing. I gave it a year and am still unsure where to start. If I could totally have my way I'd rip out and do the back splash in the 2nd picture. I just don't want to rip it out based on my hate for the pea green paint. I love your comments, keep them coming.

I loved having a green kitchen....you just need the right green. I have used SW Hearts of Palm and loved it. It is a softer, but still vibrant green.

switch out those switch plates! order the colors you think are closet to the glass tile you have and find the right color : )
    http://www.arnev.com/jeweled-tone-glass-switchplates.html
OR just google search for glass switch plates for a handful of other sites.
If I were you I would paint the room mayonnaise by Benjamin Moore and install some halogen under cabinet lighting so you're less dependent on those recessed fixtures.
Lastly, visit your local lighting store and ask about can-pendant kits; it converts your can light into a junction so you can install a suspended fixture.. would be nice over the island : )

    Enjoy and good luck!

Ciara- I saw the converter kits and want them over the island. Thanks for confirming one of my ideas as good. ;)
