With the tv on the interior, I would place a new couch where the current one is, then float 2 chairs on the bookcase side, instead of the wall side. It would fit the shape so much better and make for better tv viewing.

You can try it now, using the second couch as a mock-up for the 2 chairs.

I echo Gantt's statement on the sectional. If you buy a sectional, it will severely limit your ability to rearrange the furniture for this room. It also may very well not work in another room in this house or future houses. Guests, for the most part, do no like to sit in sectionals.

Just want to give you that information. Maybe a sectional is for you. Maybe you have a family who like to sit close on the couch and that outweighs the downsides.

Regardless of the sectional vs two couches issue( and I prefer the latter), The two colors you have chosen will fade right into the wall color. Is going with a burgundy suede or blue suede an option? It would be much more pleasing than the neutrals. Bring the wall color in on your pillows. You are not afraid of color or you would never have chosen such a beautiful and colorful rug. Dont stop now.

Is there any way you would be willing to move the tv? Also, the bookcase really looks like an after-thought. Possible solutions:

-remove it
-build it up to the ceiling and paint the bookcase and fireplace all one color

The bookcase is built-in.....
This is our snuggle on the couch with kids /cousins family hang out room.... So I think a sectional will work great. And with the staircase and built ins I think it's the best arrangement for the space.

I think you've got a good plan. I have a sectional in the basement and it is perfect for snuggling with grandkids and watching TV. I'd definitely get the neutral color. You've got nice color in the rug and can add color with pillows, art and accents. It sounds like you've made great decisions. Take your time with the coffee table decision and please make sure the size is appropriate for the sectional. The one I chose for our sectional wasn't the best shape or size.

U can't go wrong cause either will match. Maybe look at ur wall colors and see how they match next.

You are not really making any changes except a sectional in the same color, as you show. Mix it up. Have fun.

I understand the white cabinet is a built-in. However, the design is not working. There is no connect between the fireplace and the built-in. It oddly protrudes beyond the fireplace and it's white color further disconnects the fireplace and built-in. It does not appear to have been custom-made for the space.

Just my 2-cents.

I think you are wise to buy neutral colors for your large furniture. You can always add color with pillows.

we've had that rug for years and still love it. i'd probably go with the darker sectional because it might stay a little more clean, but either would look fantastic!

I guess I'd look at a green or gold and then add blue and/or burgundy(red?) accents.

I agree with the comment that the bookcase is a bit disconnect.
Since you'd like to keep it would you consider extending it to the ceiling and paint it so that it blends in more? The current contrast between it and the walls/fireplace makes it compete with fireplace.

I like the dark cloth swatch if it's not the same as the walls. (My co-worker has a beige/tan couch and it's so close to her wall colour the result was lack luster--just a big blur of the same colour.)

Your plans for room sound great. It's going to be a wonderful room!

Going to try and find console table, lamps, make collage of framed pictures..... Maybe wall lighting? New ottoman, thinking blue .... Maybe blue curtains. I know so many dislike sectionals but with our kids were having such fun!

I would try slate color sofas over beige as this color can give lot of freedom to add any color accents and gives a stately look.

OP, I agree a dark brown leather ottoman style coffee table would provide good contrast.

The sectional color goes great with the rug.

Are you planning on putting a table on the end nearest to the kithen table? If not, move the rug toward the wall.

Solid pillows in the blues and red of the rug would be a good choice. Get something with texture.

A mirror would be a good choice over the couch.

Drapes should be the same in fam room and kitchen. It is basically one room.

Yes sectional already purchased! There were only a few shades on sale in the material I needed to have with kids --- blue would have been fun for the sofa. Maybe in 15 years. :))

Keep the Pottery Barn theme going with a gallery wall above the sectional. Add some picture lights for a gallery type display.

I would put end tables at the end of your sectional to balance the length of the rug and provide a place for a reading lamp. Lighting is important, you want layers of light.

I was thinking of putting a long narrow console behind the sofa on the side near kitchen, (behind sofa facing TV). I think it might look better than staring at back of couch and might offer a nice spot for lamps... :)

It's so dark in this room at night so really want to get the lighting done well..... Wall sconces? Lamps on end tables? Or console table with lamps? Or all of the above? ;)

I would not place any light along the wall. It will interfere with the tv.

I like the idea of a console table behind the couch. Then add a couple of low, boxy lamps.

The rug should be moved so that it does not protrude beyond the fp. If you are not putting and end table on the end of the couch, rug should be moved so that it is under the couch.

I agree with all CDR just said. I love the idea of a narrow long console table to soften the look of the back of the sectional. I'd start there and then figure out lighting. I agree to move more of the rug under the sectional. Not sure about a blue ottoman. Get lots of coffee table and/or ottoman opinions before you make that decision.

Emimat, can you please answer these questions

1) Are you planning on placing a side table at the end of the sectional hear the window?
2) What do you see as the function of the coffee table? (looks, drinks and snacks, feet prop?)
3) You need one piece of large art over the fireplace? Do you have anything in mind?

For the bookcase, I would suggest removing the pictures (too small and too high). I would make the 2 shelves even. Then, in effect, you will have three even shelves (counting the top one above the bookcase.). I would fill them with a collection of vases all the same color. Or, I would buy 3 elongated bowls, all the same and place one on each shelf.

I have no advice but just wanted to say that your child is so cute sitting there!!! Love the new sofa too

I would recommend a kick pleat valance for your kitchen windows. For the door, the valance would be hung at the same height as others, but would continue to cover the top door frame.

I would use a color similar to this photo, but a subtle stripe or tweed, not floral.

For the family room, I would do the valance, plus panel drapes. This would be custom work. I would stick to a neutral tone, so that you can keep them for a long time.

2) coffee table function: foot prop mostly and looks. In rare instances I could use a tray for food/drinks. I'm looking for something padded and cozy. Our couch seat height is about 17 inches.

3) yes... Something above fireplace. Not sure yet. My dad is a photographer and has lovely ocean and landscape scenes. How big would you recommend?

Paint: painted before we moved in. It's a great color. Warm and rich with red undertones. It's Divine Green Mocha. I'm not sure exactly what the white trim is.

End tables:

I would buy 2 very slimline end tables for the 2 ends of the sectional. So, ones that are as deep as the sectional, but very narrow.

coffee table: I would recommend an ottoman coffee table. It has a padded top like an ottoman, but open bottom.

art above fp: I think this will be easy.....see pic of girl hanging on wall. Take that and use as a mock-up. Place on fp. It should be about this size, maybe a little taller.

Your parents will be honored to have both of their art in one place.....an I assume the price it right!!

CDR is a very big help emimat and is providing the same kind of help to me in a living room dilemma:) Keep posting pics of things you're considering. This dilemma is a good one. It's a very nice room and you'll like it more and more as you make a few additions. I prefer to just go one step at a time so I don't get overwhelmed, but maybe you can handle more decisions at once than I can:)

It looks sort of taupe. With kids, any lighter color could be a disaster. The color goes great with your rug.
