Ideas for Formal Dinning Room-Sitting Room seperated by French Doors.

We recently purchased this house that has a formal dinning room and a sitting/reading room that is seperated by French Doors. With not being a big fan of having a formal dinning area we are looking for alternative ideas how how to utilize this space. Furniture, flooring, paint color, etc

Depends on your lifestyle, do you require a home office or a TV room?

You have a lot of leggy furniture and the wood and metal baker's racks and ladder shelves will date your rooms and take up valuable decorating space. Is that an electric FP right of the table? To convert the DR to something different, remove the light fixture and replace it with a semi-flush one or even a nice ceiling fan. A sofa and two chairs are the most flexible pieces for arranging and then rearranging. You could use this seating in both rooms. Make the front room as a conversational space with a reading nook in the window. The DR would be for TV and casual family lounging, plus you could center a desk in the bay window to have a small home office.

Thank you all for the ideas/suggestions - much appreciated! I like the idea of turning the dinning room into my home office as I currently work out of the house and am utilizing one of our bedrooms for that. Like the idea of a ceiling fan in place of the light fixture. Front room into a conversational space is definitely the direction we were thinking. Just wondering the best way of setting this up using a sofa and two chairs without cluttering it?

How about this kind of an arrangement for a sitting area ... 4 club chairs/table:

The front space will look friendlier and more welcoming if the sofa faces the entry with a coffee table 18" from it. You could float the sofa 8-10" out in front of the two windows with stationary drapery panels hung floor to ceiling over fiber or fabric roman shades. You'd still have room for a piece of art between the windows about 5" above the sofa back. Angle two armchairs with a round table and lamp in the bay window. Try a console table or credenza on the stairwell wall with lamps and art. You can hang a pair of art pieces to flank the French doors with centers 60" above the floor. Add an area rug or not. Then take the same roman shades to the DR bay, put your desk there so your back is to the window for light coming over your shoulders. You didn't say what that dark piece is on the wall. That might determine furniture placement. If you'll conduct business in person with others, a pair of armless accent chairs could face the windows on the opposite side of your desk. The large wall might be a great spot for a large freestanding bookcase piece with storage behind doors.

It depends on your lifestyle but when you go to sell the house, turn it back into a dining room.
