We sealed the external surfaces of the rammed earth walls, but not the internal. I'm afraid I can't remember what product we used, but it was a clear spray finish similar to what you'd put on a stone surface. A good person to talk to would be a tile supplier or you could google floor finishers. We also tiled the top edge of the wall wherever it protruded past the roof with a ceramic tile with a colour remarkably similar to the earth.

The house was completed in 2006 and apart from some dark staining along the top, the walls are holding up fine.

Thanks Warwick. The house looks beautiful. My rammed earth walls were built three years ago now but the corrosion is quite bad as they weren't capped. So I am trying to find a good solution for capping. The tile sounds good. I've also seen steel.

I guess steel flashing is the typical solution to waterproof the top edges of walls - we use this a lot. The idea of tiles for the rammed earth was mostly about trying to match the colour. Good luck with your search!

roughly how much would a wall cost to build in materials like this one in the pic- 8 ft high and 8 ft wide- my husband and I are having an argument because I believe it would not be that much and he is saying thousands of dollars- Thanks Tracy

Hi Tracy, I'm not sure which country you're in. Based on your imperial measurements, I'm guessing not Australia (which is where we and the project are). Here, rammed earth costs around $400 - $500 per square metre. Since 8 x 8ft = 2.4 x 2.4m = 5.8 square metres, that would equate to around AU$2,600 give or take.

Something to note though would be that doing only one wall is a tiny job so would incur an additional cost I imagine. I hope that's been helpful.
